My favorite hangout!
Posted by Vicki_R on January 18, 2007 - 6:50pm.
We recently were fortunate to get a whole foods where I live in the burbs.  That has become my new hangout.  I can't help it, when I am in there shopping the isles and smiling with the other shoppers around me, I feel good about myself.  Yes, the prices are high and I spend way to much, but when I buy the organic waffles with the cute Koala Bear on the package for my children, I feel good!  Isn't that what being green is about, things that are good for the environment and good for the soul as well.  I am trying to embrace being green and in doing so, trying to make changes, sometimes a bit slowly, but ones I know I can make and be happy with.  By each of us doing things individually, we can make a huge difference together, whether it be in city or in a rural town.

I love Whole Foods too! I like that they tell you where the produce actually comes from. It makes me think about the organic versus local benefits while choosing things. Because these nectarines might be organic, but if they had to be shipped all the way to New York from California, then maybe it would be a little better for the world to just buy the New Jersey nectarines. But I like that I have the knowledge to think about those things while wandering the Whole Foods aisles.

Not only can you feel good about shopping there, but you can also do something for the environment as well. Recently, when I was there shopping, I discovered that they have a policy where they will give you money back for using your own bags instead of using there plastic or brown ones.  It is another way that they trying to encourage people to make small everyday changes in their own lives.

Organic Hangout on a different level

While I like Whole Foods and the large variety they have available in "Certified" Organics I tend to choose 3 other choices instead that help our environment even more.

1.  Our local food coop.  Often times the product coming in is not only organic but the coop product helps sustain villages by cutting out the money making middle man and giving it directly to the harvesting farmers who labor long and hard for little.

2.  I support our local farmers markets.  I can buy organic and non and cut out significant amounts of packaging waste, and eliminate huge amount of shipping and transportation cost to the company and our environment.

3.  At harvest time I support our local Cropshare Farmer for my winter canning items when available -- Organic of course.

No junk, little to no waste and no product recall.  :)
