We’ve all heard about them but do we really understand them? Here’s just a bit of info on superfoods and what they mean to your health.

Superfoods are powerful enough to help lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, and can even improve moods.  The best part: there are no side effects! A healthy diet incorporating a variety of the so-called superfoods will help maintain a healthy weight, fight disease, and allow people to live longer. Superfoods were chosen because they contain high concentrations of crucial nutrients, as well as the fact that many of them are low in calories. They are found in grocery stores around the world and are ‘real’ (unprocessed) foods.

Substituting superfoods for mainstays in a regular eating plan is a simple lifestyle change that’s not only painless, but delicious too. Incorporating these powerhouses of nutrition is relatively easy and can be less expensive than buying processed unhealthier fare. With a little planning and the right recipes eating as many superfoods a day is a cinch.

 Next up: Superfoods what are they and how many should be eaten a day?

Daily dose

I try to eat as many of the Superfoods a day as I can but sometimes it's hard. Escpecially when there are so many other tasty items available, like Quesadillas with guacamole, yum. If I start the morning with yogurt, oatmeal, berries, and apple juice I'm doing pretty good aren't I?

I do wonder how many is enough for a day. Looking forward to your next installment to shed some light on that aspect of eating healthy.

Thank you for the info on the super foods. When you go grocery shopping how do you know which foods are unprocessed? Is it in a certain section or what? If you could let me know that would be GREAT!! Thnak you!

Unprocessed = no additives
by Statuesqueone on July 23, 2007 - 3:26pm
Pretty much if no additives have been added to the food then it can be considered unprocessed. Usually food that comes in a box, isn't raw, or has a long list of ingredients is processed. Here is a web site that lists all kinds of unprocessed foods, hopefully there is something there that interests you. Spices, herbs, and teas aren't listed but they should be. Good luck and let me know what you find appealing.

This past weekend we were in the Berkshires in MA.  I took my boys blueberry picking and it was great.  What a wonderful experience and now we have many, many berries.  I seem to eat them like peanuts and knowing that I handpicked them is even better.  To superfoods and super good eating.

exciting

Blueberry picking?!? That sounds like a LOT of fun! I don’t think have ever gone to go picking anything. The only thing that I have ever picked is apricot’s and grapes from my grandparents’ back yard. Sounds like you have to go exploring, that’s what I like! Guess I will have to do some research to find out where I can do these kinds of things in my area.

Good thing they freeze
by Statuesqueone on July 24, 2007 - 3:39pm
I just got a great deal on 2 pounds of fresh blueberries. I ate them for a couple days and froze the rest. Now I'll have one of the best superfoods you can eat everyday for a good while and at a great price! Might make this really yummy coffee cake with the frozen berries, it's about the only way I can get my husband to eat blueberries, health conscience he is not!

ripe for the picking

Blueberries are great.  I also eat them by the handfuls and you are right that now is the time to freeze them for future use.  I never knew that they grow on bushes.  I went berry pickin to in the past and it was a lot of fun.  Very relaxing!!!  It is wonderful to see your food right before your eyes, just ripe for the picking.
