be tourists in your own city

i dont have any kids of my own, but always loved when my mom would pretend that we lived somewhere else in the world and that we would be tourists in our own town. no matter where we went, we had a great time exploring and it seems like there is always something you havent seen in your town worth visiting. what do you all think?

What a great idea!

My Mom did kind of the same thing with us kids (there were 3 of us.) She would take us to Balboa Park in down town San Diego or to the zoo. Sometimes we would just walk around a part of town that we didn't live in just to check it out, that was always an adventure.

The museums were always fun to go to in the summer because we never went during the school year unless it was with our class. It was a lot more fun with the family because we got to do things like play in the Koi pond, or explore the old zoo cages. We always had great summers and it's because of stuff like this that we did.

It's easy to take the nearby stuff for granted, that's for sure. And it's good to really know your own city, and what better way? Of course, Portland's tourist traps are wonderful places anyway, so it's pretty easy here.

Powell's

I really want to go to Portland to browse at Powell's. And I remember reading something about there being a great zoo.

I grew up in Portland, Maine, where the economy was all about tourism, restaurants, and the seafood industry. My mom definitely took my brother and I to the many beautiful spots to enjoy all types of weather, and I remember epic, day long trips to the children's museum, and a weekly journey to the library. 

Here in New York, I really should do more touristy things more often. I really, really love the Museum of Natural History. Why don't I go there more often? Glad you prompted that question, Mo. Maybe I'll go next weekend or the one after.

It's a great thing to do, explore your own city.  I grew up in New York and have never been to the top of the Empire State Building.  I think this summer I am going to take my sons there.  Last summer I went with a friend to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.  It was really wonderful to be just like a tourist.  I had forgotten how great NYC is and how much there is to do.  We hung out, had dinner, relaxed and took in the sites.

I live in a really small town and there's not much to explore, but I really do act like a tourist at times. Especially when I'm feeling inspired by a cloudy day to take photos.

I have explored and found so many neat hideouts and places that I never thought existed here in my town. I do not have kids either, but I do take my little niece or cousins to the outskirts of town to take photos and we have a lot of fun. I do love the idea, I will try it more often.

Taking photos is a great way to find hidden paths.  Looking though the lens gives you an entirely unique perspective on everyday things.  You should post some of your photos for us to see.

You do get a completely inspiring view of the world through photography. 

 

I was actually going to mention that, I've been looking for a place to share my photos with the Lime community, sort of like an uploading section or something. 

 

I have added some photos to the walk-out  flickr account before though. :)

My best friend and her daughter just left to explore NYC.  We are both from there originally and now she lives in VA.  She wanted to take her daughter to the city and show her all the things we saw as kids, going to Bloomingdales being one of them.  Don't judge!!!  I am envious.  To see the city through the eyes of a child.  What a great experience.

Exploring Locals

The area surrounding our home in Del Sur is a natural preserve filled with parks and trails to explore.  My kids and I often go out and explore the trails looking for unique plants and animals to take pictures of.  The trails are great since they have ones of different lengths and various difficulty levels to meet our moods or time allotted.  When we get the pictures developed we relive the great time we had as we put them into our scrapbook.

to the beach+

My kids have been asking me about going to the beach this summer. We live about an hour or so away from the Jersey Shore and yet we have not really explored.  I think I will take them to the beach and try and have an old fashioned day in the sand.  I say try because with two boys who tend to fight, i am a bit worried.  But that is what the summer is all about.  I'll keep you posted how it goes.
