Veneerware instead of Paper/Plastic Disposable Plates
Posted by Jamie Outlaw on July 19, 2007 - 3:39pm.

I posted this in another forum, but since it's summer and a lot of people are entertaining, you might be interested in an alternative to plastic/paper plates and disposable plastic utensils.

A company called Bambu produces a line of plates (various sizes), utensils and trays all made from organic bamboo. I've seen the plates for sale in my local grocery store and you can buy them online at several places.

Here's a link to the company's web site:

Paper and Plastics
by Clementine16 on July 19, 2007 - 4:09pm
I was just reading on another website about the use of paperware and plastic utensils in the summer.  It is amazing how much is used!  I do know a lot of people that find it much simpler when eating outdoors, especially those with young children.  This looks like a great alternative to all the papers and plastics.  I haven't seen this in my local grocery store but next time I am there I will have to check it out.

I never realized

You are right Clemintine I never really thought about it, but the sales of plastic utensils and paperware go sky high in the summer! I have never seen them in my local grocery store either, but I will have to check it out! I live in a community so I am not sure if they will carry product like that... I will have to at least look for it though! Thanks for the heads up!!

Deja Vu
by blumerlgrl on July 20, 2007 - 8:12pm
I have recently switched (right in the middle of a 50 package bag) from styrofoam plates to just using my dishes when at home. However my husband owns a mobile catering business and he's up to his elbows in disposible paper products. Thanks for the information we will check it out.

Worth a try

I went to this site and it looks like something I could talk to the owners about. They package all the food my husband buys so it is not up to him. Do you have any stats about the kind of waste this styrofoam produces that just might help push them over the edge.

are they washable
by Vicki_R on July 22, 2007 - 7:15pm
I saw bamboo plates in Smith & Hawken several months ago and thought it would be a great barbeque must have and how COOL is that.  Is bamboo dishwasher safe does anyone know?  I'm just not into washing dishes after entertaining a huge crowd.

it depends

These plates are designed as "single use" and degrade rather quickly.  I doubt they would stand up to the heat in a dishwasher, but it's worth a try :D

$$$?

How do they compare to paper or plastic in price?  Are they comparable?

higher cost

The bamboo plates and utensils cost more than paper & plastic.  The paper plates made from recycled paper are comparable in price.

I use old fashion….
by Cowboydavey on July 25, 2007 - 8:33am

When I do an outing or picnic, I have a set of 1960’s Mel Mac ware. I have also mis-matched flatware. I carry it in an old fashion picnic basket. I got all of this at a garage sale. I have been using them over and over. I have also a set of mugs and glasses. I find it not only environmentally friendly, but save me money. I don’t have to buy paper plates and cups over and over.  I do get razed about at times.

Plates to use over and over
by Clementine16 on July 26, 2007 - 9:19am
I also have a set of Tupperware plates that I have had for years that I will use when going on picnics or just eating outside on the patio.  They are just as easy to transport as paper and styrofoam and they are great for children since they will not break!  But of course I can take them home, wash them, and use over and over again.
