275 gallon oil tanks, other uses?
Posted by whitney cardman on July 12, 2007 - 4:14pm.
my fiance's business is in oil tank removal. the old oil gets recycled that's not the problem. the old tanks are the problem. he's been turning them into bbq's but we only sell two or three a month and theyre really starting to pile up. the only other alternative is taking them to a dump and paying 5 bucks each for them to end up in a land fill. an option which i flatly forbid him to do and now we're sitting around scratching our heads trying to think about what else we can do with them. the cleanout isn't a problem at all i just need to come up with ideas for what to do with the empty cleaned ones, besides bbq'ers. they don't make very attractive planters and there isn't a scrap metal recycling center anywhere around here! any ideas?

Pig troughs
by Statuesqueone on July 13, 2007 - 3:48pm
We used to use something similar to feed our pigs in, they were cut in half lengthwise. They might also make nice water/feed troughs for horses or cows. If you can cut them in half, clean them up and maybe coat them with a non-toxic sealer you might have a market for them as troughs...... Are you close to the country?

Have you tried listing them on craigslist?
by Chris on July 13, 2007 - 10:56am

I personallly can think of a buch of things you could use the oil tanks for, and I'm sure there are others out there that may be interested.

As an example, many restaurants, and car service shops, need containers like those to store their used oil.

Another potential for use for small containers, is to cut them in half and plant flower beds in them....I remember my Uncle doing something like that when I was younger, he had two huge decorative planters, that he did not want to plant directly into, so he cut one of those large 55 gallon drums in half and and placed those halves inside the planters, turned out to be a lot cheaper than than buying pots, becuase the guy he got them from was in a similar problem that you are having.

Available oil tanks
by OmniGlobal on September 6, 2008 - 1:12pm
We are a start-up company.  We might have a use for some of your left-over oil tanks, either 275 or 330 gallon, for conversion to a non-oil, non-containment use, as long as they are reasonably clean and not falling apart.

It appears from your posting that you are located both in Viginia and Florida.  Being located in New England, obviously Virginia would be much better for us no matter how the tanks are transported.  Please clarify your location in your reply.

Please reply here and we'll work out a temporary e-mail address.

Thankyou.

Hello GJM, I have non-oil, non-containment uses for used, oval 275 and / or 330 gallon-size oil tanks.   Is it oval ?   If you know of any others I'd be interested.   The only caveates are that they must be oval and not be rusted out on the down side, rusted thru to the point of being weak metal you could push thru with your hand. Accept my 'contact request' and we'll exchange e-mails for further conversation. Thanks.

Got Oil Tanks?
by ezstmatt on September 20, 2008 - 10:30pm

Wendy,

Do you/hubby still have the oil tanks?  Are you in VA or FLA? I am in central VA and would take as many as you care to get rid of...  I found your post via a google search and thought it might be worth pursuing.. you are good to keep them out of a landfill... worst fate for recycleables..cheers... (I will try and check back here at the post to see if you get this inquiry...)

Break the Oil Addiction
by greenrich on October 27, 2008 - 1:05am

First of all, America is addicted to oil and Bush admit it, a bad habit that we have to break...Instead we can focus and invest on alternative renewable energy like Solar, Wind, Water or Hydro, Bio Diesel...etc. The change must start from us.

explore, learn, save the earth, and live life to the fullest.

might as well ask your local government that handles such issues to know what to do best.
