I have been in search of eco-friendly kitty litter as part of my 2007 go green resolution.
Now this may seem simple enough, but I have to tell you it is not. The cats are the easiest part of this...The products...they are a completely different story!
I started with the Swheat Scoop...The wheat version of kitty litter, after all, I had coupons! The texture was great, the cats liked it, it did not have too bad an odor after heavy use...HOWEVER, it is wheat and when it gets wet it turns to well cement! I endeavored to make it work and no matter how often I cleaned the box, it was using a paint scraper to get it out of the box...Supposedly this is flushable, but I would not even chance it.
Round 2: Johnny Cat, after all Whole Foods carries it so it must be eco-friendly. Again, the cats were no problem, but the urine odor was too much to deal with after scooping.
Round 3: Pine pellets, you know the ones that break down to sawdust. Okay this one the cats hated, they used every bath mat I have to let me know of thier dissatisfaction, and the odor was awful! this lasted exactly 2 days
Today I am back to the Arm and Hammer brand. I will continue my quest for the perfect kitty litter, but I felt this was a good subject for my first foray into the Lime Forums

I have also run just about every brand of cat litter there is. I discovered at the feed store clay litter. It just clay. I found if I mix baking soda with it and some play sand the cat love it. After I scoop it and I can no longer use it for cat litter, I put on my driveway. I can do that here in the country. Cats just don’t like pine or cedar shavings at all.

Then there are always a couple of alternatives you can try at home, here's one my fiance and I used in college, try shredding your old newspapers, you'll find the paper absorbs just as much, and it's a great way to get rid of that pile of papers if you don't plan on recycling them right away!
