Minding Your Ojas
Posted by Vicki_R on July 15, 2007 - 2:04pm.

India’s ancient health system, Ayurveda, says you can tap into a mysterious force that can make you feel the effervescent joy that makes us want to kiss strangers and do a jig when we are happy. The name for the force that flows through us when all is well is called ojas. Ojas is our energy, our vitality, our immunity, our fertility and our longevity. By cultivating our ojas, experts say that you can experience deep, genuine joy, more often and attain a new level of vibrant “juicy “health. Paying attention to ojas means slowing down. It also means making conscious choices in the everyday sector of our lives. We can actually feed our ojas by cultivating an important force known as agni-meaning our digestive fire. If your agni is weak, food can then turn into bad ojas. Helping our digestive system maximize its nutritional power in every morsel is important. These are some helpful tips to achieve Ayurveda and healthy ojas. Next week-“Striving for Balance” in Ayurveda.

Drink Ginger Tea: Helps to stoke the internal fire and aids in digestion.

Forgo Ice Cubes: For best agni efficiency, drink room temperature water.

Have a Noonday Feast: Your stomach produces plenty of heat at this time of day and it is the best time of day for digestion.

Choose the Freshest Ingredients: Ayurveda pays attention to the energy in foods and the suns energy changes with each season and what it produces. Organic milk, ghee, almonds and honey.

I have never heard of ojas but it sounds pretty cool. I now work with an Indian gentleman so will ask him for more info on this powerful force. I do three of the four things on your list and will definitely start drinking ginger tea, I love ginger. This is very timely as I just watched a video here on Lime that said people should drink herb tea but change up every six weeks. It is way past six weeks for me, more like six months, so changing to ginger tea is just what I needed to hear, thanks!

so drink away

Another force that needs to be cultivated is your agni-known as your digestive fire. It is one of the central tenets of Ayurvedic nutrition.  Agni helps the body digest food and absorb nutrients, thus infusing the body with ojas.  If your agni is weak, you can turn it around.  In the morning, your agni is like a fire and has died down, drinking steaming ginger tea helps to stoke the internal fire so it's  better prepared to "cook" the food you eat.  Drinking ginger tea throughout the day can continue to clear and and aid digestion.  So drink away!

better for my body

My kids were playing soccer and they complained about their warm water.  I told them it was good for their agni and they seemed to listen.  I guess it sounded very important almost spiritual.  Maybe I'm onto something.  I know that I have trouble drinking really cold water.  I do find that room temperature is better for me, so I am glad to hear it is better for my body.

yogi tea

I just bought Yogi Ginger Lemon Tea and it is wonderful.  I started to drink a hot cup in the morning and one after dinner.  I love the smell of it when I am sipping it, but it is a bit hot not in temperature but in heat. Hope my agni is starting to work!
