Do you think the use of food additives have increased illness and disease?

More than likely

We have seen an increase in cancer rates for many years now and I would definitely link it to the food additives. I personally do not buy processed foods or ones that have additives in them for this very reason. I had cancer at a young age and that frightened me enough to stop eating things with colorings, perservatives, hormones, antibiotics, etc. I haven't had cancer since and it's been 26 years..... Let's just hope I can go another 26 years, if not longer, without having to deal with that dreaded disease.

Who can say that the use of food additives are the CAUSE of increased illnesses ans dieseases? You can NEVER pinpoint a problem, there can and could be a million other excuses or issues that have increased numbers. But you cannot say that food additives are the ONLY thing that is causing it.

without a doubt

While some additives are safe and even increase nutritional value in food, some are not. It's very important to know what additives are being added to our food and what risks they have. According to cspinet we should definitely avoid sodium nitrite, saccharin, caffeine, olestra, acesulfame K, and artificial coloring.

We should definitely just stick to organic and try our hardest to avoid buying processed foods like ecobabe mentioned.  Here's a cool site about Food Safety/Food Additives

Exactly we should try and stay away from processed foods and stickto fresh, whole foods instead. But realistically, it's hard to boycott all processed foods, so we should definitely educate ourselves about what food additives we should REALLY stay away from.

According to Six Wise we should avoid the following 12 additives at all costs; propyl gallate, BHA & BHT, potassium bromate, monosodium glutamate, aspartame, acelsufame-k, olestra, sodium nitrate, blue 1 /blue 2, red 3, yellow 6.

i would say the biggest problem with the american diet today is the amount of processed, additive saturated food we eat and how little we seem to care. that said, i eat my share of chips so maybe i shouldn't be talking.

Education

I agree with madame - we need to educate ourselves and others as to what additives are most bad for us. I would much rather eat a meal made from fresh and natural products instead of something processed any day. But that does not always happen. Most people are always on the go and looking to make things quicker and easier in their lives.  That includes the foods that they put into their body. The website that enigma shared is great and can really help when deciding what foods to choose at the grocery store.

parisians are on to something
by Vicki_R on July 11, 2007 - 3:55pm
Not only do parisians drink red wine which is great for them, but there food is fresh.  People go each day to the store to buy bread, veggies and their meats.  Her in the USA, we are so used to going once a week to the store to stock up, so we need food that has preservatives.  Buy fresh, that is the answer.

Do you even have to think about this?  It is a given in my world.  I wouldn't be working so hard to have an organic garden if I thought for one moment that additives are not placing everyone at a high risk.  All the risks are not known at this time but why take any risks?

Do you really want all those chemicals in your body, and  in case  you didn't know, they don't leave your body for a long time?  They just hang around in your liver and anywhere they can and  forever causing damage wherever tand however they can.

Hey check it out there have been umpti-million studies showing the negative impact of additives on the human body and also on the health of our pets.
