Learning to love fruit
Posted by FlowerPoppy on April 10, 2007 - 5:00pm.
I'm trying to add more fruit to my diet. I grew up hating anything even resembling that of fruit and now I'm regretting it. Any suggestions to help me get used to and eventually love fruit?

fruit tasting for one
by dancingqueen on April 10, 2007 - 4:07pm

I remember dating a boyfriend who went into a market and just bought whatever fruit looked interesting.  I thought he was crazy at the time, but it was so great.  We tasted fruits we had always seen, but were afraid to try.  That day I fell in love with mangos and kiwis.

Just go to a good market that sells fresh fruit and see what appeals to you.  Don't be shy.  Tasting is the way to find out what you like and don't like.  Be adventurous!!!

make smoothies

My body actually craves fruit, especially during the summer.  Strawberries, melons, grapes, and especially granny smith apples.  The antioxidants in fruits is undisputed.  Try and make some smoothies with berries and yogurt if you need to ease you way into the land of fruit.  It will get your tastebuds used to the flavors.

hurray for smoothies

I have been trying really hard to consume the recommended 8-9 servings of fruit and veggies, and smoothies have been a godsend.  Every morning I whirl together frozen and/or fresh fruit, ice, plain or vanilla yogurt, agave nectar (you could use honey), and a splash of fruit juice.   I sometimes throw in a little Benefiber for extra fiber.  My favorite combo is frozen strawberries and a banana, but I also use frozen mangos and peaches.    I even made an avocado smoothie tonight (a popular treat from Philippines I read about) - avocado, milk, a dollop of plain yogurt, lots of honey, and ice.  Very rich and creamy.

I also just discovered Pluots, which are a hybrid of 75% plum and 25% apricot.  The ones with dark purple skin (like a plum) are unbelievably juicy and sweet... also great in a smoothie.

The key to trying new fruits and enjoying them is knowing how to tell when they are fresh and ripened.  Research new fruits online before purchasing them.  Or ask around.  If you go to a store with an actual produce manager (like a Whole Foods Markets) they should be able to tell you.  Heck, ask the lady who is sniffing the melons.

Suggestion

Google information on the fruit you enjoy the most. And then use this information as an incentive to eat it. For example, I just found out, that except for blueberries, apples have the highest amount of antioxidants compared with other fruits. And not just a little higher or much higher, but seven times the amount of most other fruits. I've always been on the fence with apples; bananas taste much better to me, BUT this new information has me trying to add an apple a day to my daily intake. Anti-oxidants helps fight cancer, you know, and I'm all about that.

an apple a day

I knew that an apple a day was good for you, but not 7x as much.  Glad I eat one each and every day.

Apples in a Smoothie?
by chrisw on May 3, 2007 - 2:07pm

Okay, here is a totally unrelated question...but I have braces and can't really eat an apple right now...so, are they good in a smoothie and what would be good to combine them with??

Just wondering...

In a smoothie?

I'm not sure about apples in a smoothie. I'm sure you can find recipes for that. But you can definitely use apples in a juicer. I bought one several months ago and have juiced on occassion. You can put in whatever you one and receive lots of veggies in juice form. But if you want a great book try "Smoothies for Dummies." Lots of recipes, from healthy ones to desserts.

Just try it, what do you have to lose?  Add some vanilla yogurt, maybe a frozen banana for substance and some oj.  Blend away.  I am sure it will be great.  Let us know.

Have you tried using a juicer? Even though you won't have the benefit of the fiber, fresh, raw juices contain all the enzymes, vitamins and minerals from the fruit.

getting the whole benefit

To get the most from your fruit and the antioxidants that you need, you need to eat fruit in its whole form.  Give some a try and I know you will be able to find a few you like.

LIME's salad
by Vicki_R on May 16, 2007 - 9:02am
I made the spinach strawberry salad LIME posted last week for mother's day and it was delicious.  You should try it and so easy.  Yet another way to incorporate fruit into your diet.  Go to the recipe section and give it a try.

Just dive in!

When I was a kid we never had much fruit in the house. Some apples, mainly bananas. Sometimes green grapes, cantaloupe and water melon.  It was canned fruit cocktail, we all fought for the cherry. Now that I am eating a more Vegan diet I have branched out and discovered more fruits. What I do I read about the fruit on the web and then give it a try.  I mix fruits together and that helps. I also put in my cereals and in smoothies. Get a juice extractor and drink the juice.

baking with fruit
by Vicki_R on June 24, 2007 - 4:26pm
Do  you use a lot of fruit in your baked goods since you are a vegan?  I hear that applesauce and prunes are good substitutes for oil  in cooking.  I noticed your chocolatae cake recipe and will have to give it a try.

You can use any type of fruit.  I have grilled pineapple and it is great.  I bet bananas would be awesome with a little chocolate drizzled over or better yet some dark rum.

star fruit
by stuart-in-hawaii on September 13, 2007 - 6:17pm
one of the great little things i've discovered in hawaii are the star fruit ... they are awesome, the consistency of a kiwi fruit ... you don't see them in grocery stores here; people pick them from the trees in their yard and they make their way to the little open air markets that proliferate all over the island ... are they grown in other areas of the country? Florida, for instance?
