A Dose of Serenity: Creating Your Own Mantra!
Posted by Vicki_R on March 5, 2007 - 1:46pm.
A mantra is a Sanskrit syllable, word or verse that when repeated, creates sonic vibrations that encourage spiritual awakening.  Any sound that speaks to your heart, will suffice.  They say that whatever you choose, make it melodious and meaningful, since your enjoyment of the word's sound and connection to it's meaning contribute to a mantra's power.  Repeat it silently or audibly as you take a walk, wash the dishes or sit quietly.  Is repeating your own mantra the way to gain a dose of serenity?

I'll say!  I dearly love "HU". (Pronounced,"Hugh.....")

I've sung it for many (35) years, it's been my mantra.  It's been my lifesaver. I always feel more love, balance, and together after I sung HU. I get inner answers, too, for what I need.

My favorite thing.

Here's a couple of very cool sites to hear it:

(The first one always gives me chills.)

finding the right mantra
by Vicki_R on April 27, 2007 - 11:21am
It sounds like it really helps you out.  That's what I need, but I am having trouble finding one that suits me.  I don't know if it should be funny to give me a chuckle or really serious.

Mantras can definitely help with quieting the chattering of the mind, which certainly helps with serenity.

It's not necessary to use Sanskrit, although some of the ancient words have a lot of power to them.  In my view they also have too much baggage, however it's good to just use something that resonates with you personally.

Some also say it's good to keep your personal mantra a secret.

Raa-Dhaaa-SwaMMM-EEEE

HI!  :)  Very nice to find this topic being discussed. Recently I posted about one of my favorite mantras: Radhaswami (Ra-Dha-Swam-E): http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RADHASOAMI-REALITY/message/397

In the case of Radhaswami, it's not a secret mantra, but a sacred Dinve word millions of people are using as their simran or zikhr word, their word that triggers spiritual remembrance in a world of forgetfulness. It is not only used while concentrating at the 3rd eye center during meditation, but mentally it can be chanted during any free moments during the day as a way to get centered or re-centered spiritually, bringing some of the bliss of meditation and spirituality into the down-to-earth world of everyday life.

I also have several other sacred words, and those are secret, used a part of a meditation practice called Surat Shabd Yoga.

Namaste',

James

the sound or the word?
by Vicki_R on May 3, 2007 - 7:24am
Is it the word that is important or the way that the word sounds is the key?  I thought that the chanting of the word was what brought the mind to a  peaceful and quiet place.

Vicki, I think it's the sound.

For me, the sound of a mantra acts like a magnet to align me with the vibration it carries. So I chose one that takes me where I want to go. Each represents a different state of conscoiusness. I experiment with different words and get to know their results, and pick one I like best.

I understand that sound is the basic building block to all life. That each aspect of life carries a sound. So that's why mantras are so powerful!

Some people keep them rolling through their beings all day.

Intent
by James_Agochar on May 6, 2007 - 11:18pm
I believe there is a direct relationship between how one feels about the word being chanted, what one's intent is, or what one believes about the word, and the effect of the word. When it comes to chant, one's belief and INTENT determines the effectiveness and the state of spiritual consciousness achieved. If mantra repetition is a dry, boring ritual, one could indeed feel one's self being transported to a place of dryness. If the chanting of the sacred name is done with a spirit of bhakti, love and devotion, as if you are the lover crying out for the Presence of your Beloved, that Reality, of Divine love and bliss, can open up.

So the word is important.  It must bring you to a place of calmness and serenity?  I will have to really think about this now.
