THINKING BACK: HOW MUCH GREENER ARE YOU TODAY THAN 10 YEARS AGO?
Posted by Vicki_R on February 24, 2007 - 5:32pm.
What changes have you made that has lead you to a healthier lifestyle?  Are you living your life "healthy with a twist "and what changes have you made over the years to your everyday routine?

Tough question
by Chris on February 26, 2007 - 9:56pm

How much greener am I today than ten years ago....

Well to be honest, I've always been green, I remeber sitting back in my geography classes in junior high, listening to Mr. Bollington (yes that was his real name) talk to us about the importance of the environment, and our impact on it, staring at the poster on the wall that said "Think Globally, Act Locally" (a mantra I have stuck with ever since). So I realized I was green back then....

What's changed now, well....

First: it's much easier being green today, there are more products out there, more options for you to choose from, more places to shop...if you want to be green today and are committed to being green, it's just so much easier.

I'm still green, and would be if it was harder to be green, but honestly, the really good thing about green today ... is that it's so much easier...more attainable...more likely to be adopted by the mass, than it was 10 years ago.

Second; I work to for a company (lime.com) that's totally committed to being green, (and not just green in the environmental sense, green in a wholsitic sense, be it green health, or food etc.) so again I have to say... I am soooo much greener than I was 10 years ago.

Third; Ten years ago I kept green to myself; I thought about, I lived it, but did not socialize it and did not bring it up in regular conversations...today, wow, completely different; I could talk about green all day, comes up all the time in regular conversations, relatives want to know more about being green, and the impact that smarter consumer choices will make in the long term.... go to green events like the Green Festival....I'll end here....or I could keep going...

Today I'm not just living green, I'm working green, I'm thinking green, and seeking others that are or want to be green. So does green run thicker through my veins than it did 10 years ago, YES (but, I still have my twists here and there :-)

Do I feel like I have made a lot of changes over the years, no honestly I have not, but, there have been so many changes in the world around me, that green to me today is so much more attainable...

from green to greener
by Vicki_R on February 27, 2007 - 1:38pm
Sounds like you were ahead of the game.  Ten years ago, the only real thing I was thinking about was what to do with my newborn son and hoping that nursing him was going to be easy.  It was!!  A lot has changed for me.  Ten years ago I was just green, now I am "greener".  I look at the world differently for myself and my children.  I think about the ramafications of my choices and hope I am making the best possible for my family and the environment.  I agree that today if you are not green or plan on going green, you are definitely against the grain.  At my pool, one mom asked me if I was organic out of the blue.  I am happy to say that I have changed and am continuing to change my color for the better.

Certainly

Well, I have been green since I spent my first few years in the mid 80's in the UK, because they were already into it.

Afterwards, I started strongly more than 10 years ago up to now to sign petitions, share all the energy  saving tips with my families and friends, shop in thrift shops (which is kinda recycling as you buy used items), re use boxes to send gifts to people. walk whenever I can, re use/recycle to the max, conserve water much, promote when I can sites like lime.com, urth.tv. idealbite...Also, by organic coffee, start to use reusable shopping bags...I HAVE TO: ALL is inhale/exhale...So take from the planet BUT re give to it...Simple ...Also with my current site of infogatherer.com, I do boost "green sites" on my resources page...

Greener in Europe
by Vicki_R on February 28, 2007 - 12:44pm
It seems that europe is always ahead of us in more ways than just fashion.  They have seemed to embrace the treats of global warming and yesterday I read on LIME about Britain's eco-labeling campaign.  You seem to be doing your part.  Why do you think europe is so much more into being greener than the US?

That is why...

I guess, because, for the UK as an example, they are charity minded because they are that way. Besides, with EU regulations translated in each lingos of the EU countries, that are there to protect the environment, people are more aware of it.

Also, in the USA , people starts to understand that comfort even luxury can be okay as long as you do offset what you take energywise form the earth as well as what you do create as pollution, by recycling a lot, be energy efficient etc...In America, people start to see that currently, in 2007, the USA are 5% of the population but pollutes 25% of the planet: so, of course, they have to reduce that (and it is starting) as they seem quite behind some countries and the latter ones do not wish to clean their mess.  America CAN do it! Lime.com, urth.tv. zaadz.com etc...are sites that shows that the American people more and more are willing...But they MUST act now..for living a clean planet legacy to their kids/grandkids...IT IS NOT TOO LATE...It is easy enough to do:

If they go on:

http://www.idealbite.com/

They can have eco tips, e mailed to their e mail daily for free!

Of course, China and Mexico MUST clean their environmental impact too, as they produce a lot of "Made in..."products for the USA, but do not respect enough the environment...That is why I hardly buy Chinese goods for now...

Ciao

Much More So
by ksteckler on February 28, 2007 - 10:07pm
I'm as organic now (maybe a bit more so) as I was then, but all of my household products are eco-friendly now and none were then. I'm more aware of fair trade now, and am pretty committed to sustainable agriculture/locally-produced. I'm much more committed in general.

fair trade is good
by Vicki_R on March 1, 2007 - 4:52pm
Ten years ago I had never would of thought of buying or not buying a product based on whether the product had a fair trade label on it.  Now I do.  It actually is more important to me than the organic label.  I don't want to feel that the food I am eating came from the pain of another individual.  It almost defeats the whole purpose of eating organic and feeling better about myself.

You know green scares me

It's the color of Kryptonite, but from all this conversation, I really think I could be made a convert.

even superman tried

So, are you any greener today? We all need to try and make a difference. Even Superman tried to make the world a better place.

I hope I am
by jaerostep on March 20, 2007 - 9:41pm

I lived in San Fran 10 years ago and it seemed a lot of people were living green. I felt very overwhelmed with the idea. Like, how do I start and what do I do. I finally decided to do one small thing at a time. I decided to start with recycling aluminum, glass and plastic.

I have come a long way now. I am even making all of our soaps and lotions, and grinding all of my flour for baking.

I love how I feel now and what I am teaching my kids.
