Through meditation we can bring about greater peace of mind and powers of concentration. The length of time we meditate is not as important as the focus we give during our meditation. If we can meditate with a silent mind for 5 minutes we can bring to the fore our own divine qualities of inner peace and inner happiness. This is an inner joy independent of any outer success or outer prosperity.

1. Quite the Mind

The Goal of meditation is to go beyond the mind. Meditation cannot be done by thinking. All the different paths of meditation share this common feature of cultivating a silent mind. When our mind is silent we can start to enter a new consciousness, a consciousness not limited by the intellectual mind.

2. Concentration

In whatever we do, we will be more successful if we can concentrate fully on the task in hand. This means being single pointed. When we meditate we need to switch off from everything else and put all our attention onto the meditation.

3. Place to Meditate

It is very helpful to find a quiet place to meditate every day. I have a small corner of my room specially set aside for meditation. You can use a picture of a saint or teacher who inspires you. Or just use flowers and a candle. If you meditate in the same place every day it builds up a meditative atmosphere.

4. Aspiration

Aspiration to meditate. If we are hungry then we are eat. It is the same with meditation if we are not satisfied with what we have and would like to discover the inner peace within ourselves then we will be motivated to meditate every day. This aspiration or inner cry is perhaps more important than learning many techniques.

5. Perseverance and Patience

In the beginning we cannot expect results overnight, each time we meditate we are adding to our capacities even if we don't have great experiences then we need to persevere. If we practice sincerely we will progress.

6. Use the Qualities of the Spiritual Heart

The heart is the location of the soul. If we focus on the heart, immediately our thoughts have less power. By concentrating on our heart we can enter into the vastness of meditation.

7. Cultivate Happiness

It is important to bear in mind the goal of meditation is to uplift our consciousness and have a more positive outlook about life and about ourselves. When we meditate well we will have a positive outlook on life.

Put these techniques into use and I am sure you will be able to re/store inner peace.

time is the key
by Vicki_R on August 29, 2007 - 6:48pm
Maybe the amount of time that I expect myself to be quiet is too ambitious. If I try and spend less time doing it maybe I can truly obtain the quietness that I am seeking.  When I listen to tapes it helps me.  I like the lulling voice of the person speaking.  It helps me to relax.  I enjoyed reading your tips.

Fall is my favorate season.  I was born in November so I wonder if that has anything to do with it.  Do you believe that seasons have a vibe of there own and why does fall have a calm?

expanding meditation
by stuart-in-hawaii on September 8, 2007 - 7:16pm
the benefits of meditation multiply geometrically when we can expand our practice so that everything we do is a form of meditation ... meditation in its simplest expression is having the mind and body in the same place at the same time (mindfulness) ... if we could live our entire day as a meditation we would get much more from life, and much more done without 'doing' anything ... the concept of Wu Wei or effortless action ... it all begins with the quality of our breathing ...

mediation in every moment
by Julia-Fenster on September 9, 2007 - 2:16pm
meditation practice is simply an exercise in what we ultimatly must be doing in as much of our active life as possible - which is being mindful and "clear" and tapping into our inner spirit as the source of our choices. it is about coming into alignment with our inner and outer selves. the exercise of meditation lets us feel what that alignment experience feels like...but ultimatly it is how we can create that same state of being in our every day life that is the goal.

finding happiness
by Vicki_R on September 10, 2007 - 11:22am
What if when we enter a new conciousness, we don't like what we see?  It seems one of the goals of meditation is to be happy.  Many people are afraid to quiet their minds for fear of what they might find.

happiness
by stuart-in-hawaii on September 10, 2007 - 3:09pm

one of Tony Robbins' lines goes: people will do more to avoid pain than to gain pleasure ... if we fear a process that may lead to happiness, but in all honesty may open the door to some unpleasantries, then we are not being realistic ...

happiness and pleasure don't exist in a vacuum; they are one side of a two sided coin ... one of the goals of meditation is to accept and harmonize apparent opposites into a unified reality of 'what is' ... oneness or harmony is a goal worth pursuing, regardless of the bumps in the road ... it's all just a process of growth and learning, beginning with what's inside of our hearts ... just my opinion ... stuart

very true
by dancingqueen on September 10, 2007 - 6:03pm
I have someone close to me that is going through a lot of emotional turmoil.  Until she is able to face what her issues are and go through the pain, she is destined to keep reliving it.  Meditation can help to clafiry things and sometimes make the desire to change something easier.  I have found it difficult to confron things and know that the saying is very true.

clearing your mind
by Harley on September 11, 2007 - 2:01pm
Sometimes mediation  helps to clear and clarify my mind, others it is just too noisy and I have a hard time listening.  I know that when things in my life are quiet, by which I mean nothing terrible is going wrong, I sometimes don't know what to do with myself.  No fires to put out or someone to save.  It is amazing what we are capable are when we clear our mind and can see the possibilities.
