Matt and I bought a basket of pearl-sized red frost berries at the farmer’s market a few weeks ago. Never heard of frost berries? Neither had we.
We googled and gobbled, and discovered that the slightly tart little treasures were wholly delicious but utterly unGoogleable. We couldn’t find even one reference to frost berries (if we had, we could have had a Google whack.)
So I asked the vendor last Saturday if the pleasantly pomegranate-like berries had any other names. “Autumn olive,” he said, “but they sell better as frost berries.”
Armed with the added info, we learned that Autumn olive is a highly invasive, habitat destroying non-native shrub whose berries make an excellent sauce for venison, duck, pork and lamb. Thanks for the culinary conundrum, Google; how did we ever live without you?
