Açai: the Tree-Saving Superfood

Last year, the big thing in fruit beverages was pomegranate juice. Ads for Pom popped up everywhere, touting the benefits of the antioxidant-rich juice. There was even a dark chocolate-coated Pom flavored ice cream bar, a tasty but slightly schizophrenic blend of antioxidants and trans fats.

Pom's been riding high, but açai (“ah-sigh-ee”,) a berry that grows wild in the Brazilian rainforest, packs such a nutritional punch it could knock Pom off its perch. The Açai Supercharger smoothie is a hot seller at Jamba Juice bars, and açai juices from Sambazon and Bossa Nova are available in stores.

Anti-aging expert Dr. Nicholas Perricone counts açai as one of his ten superfoods, and no wonder: açai is a veritable fountain of youth, overflowing with the flavanoids, amino acids, and omega fatty acids that combat premature aging and heart disease. It's got calcium and vitamin E as well.

How does açai juice taste? Sambazon describes the flavor of its açai beverages as “a vibrant blend of berries and chocolate.” I tried two of Bossa Nova's açai varieties, Passionfruit and Original, which are slightly sweetened with organic agave nectar, and while I don't think they taste as good as Pom, I liked them both.

What's really sweet is Bossa Nova's Save a Tree project, in partnership with the Rainforest Alliance. According to Bossa Nova, every time you buy a bottle of one of their açai juices, you save a rainforest tree. Sambazon also devotes a portion of its profits to supporting sustainable agroforestry in the Amazon.

So when you buy a bottle of this powerful purple juice, you can rejuvenate yourself and maybe the planet, too. Who could resist?

Dark Chocolate + Berries = ACAI

I have tasted both the Sambazon and the Bossa Nova and I really love the Sambazon when used in smoothies. many local juice bars now offer sambazon and it is terrific. Really tasty! I will even go out of my way and go to my fave juice bar that has it.

The Bossa Nova I thought was tooo tart and a bit harsh, but I dont care for POM either, so that may be why.

Grew up on Gurana...

Not as healthy probably, but I grew up on a delicious soda made with Guarana, another healthful amazonian ingredient. You may be able to find it at import stores in large metro areas with Brasilian populations. So yum…

About rainforest truth...

Who hasn't read about those famous trees in that primeval forest described as the Garden Of Eden? We become convinced that narrative may have had its origin in tales of fruits and many different kinds of edible vegetables in the forests wherefrom man is supposed to have started his journey a little more than 70,000 years ago. Perhaps the fruit of the tree of life (as well as the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil) refer to trees regarded by our ancestors as good to enhance the quality of health and good to promote the alertness and creativity. I grew up in South America and knew a soft drink called "Guarana" originally from Brasil or Paraguay. But I know that there are more than just those few products: think of "Cat's Claw" from the peruvian rainforest. I am in favor of the conservation of rainforests and comment the efforts of the companies who donate part of their earnings to it.
