Last month in a New Year’s post, I wrote about resolving to have more fun in your body. I asked readers to comment on their favorite ways to throw their minds off kilter enough to make exercise anything but drudgery. The response was not deafening, but a few of you had some tidbits to share. Here they are along with my explications.

Hipster Burlesque Aerobics

Go-Go ‘Robics, a video kindly suggested by jjackson, features The World Famous Pontani Sisters. Apparently Angie, Tara & Helen are actual sisters who travel the world doing their repertoire to a Frank Sinatra eight-track. Their workout DVD comprises “A 40 minute aerobic dance work-out where you will learn to twist, hully gully, and more!” ‘Robicisers will also “master the dance ‘Chica Alboratada’ as seen on The Conan O’Brien Show.” No Frank here, but the band Los Straitjackets will set the upbeat tempo.

The Path Less Traveled

Reader G-Money suggests a slightly tamer, but no less useful approach: “Try a new route to work, even if that means taking a new connection on the subway, or the bus instead driving,” she/he says. “Be open to new experiences and break from the routine. The people-watching abilities are bound to stimulate the brain.” Studies actually back up G-Money––the more we alter our routines, the more new neural connections that we create. A key to staying limber in mind and body is to constantly try new things.

Walk On By

I live on the seventh floor and every time one of my very fit friends knocks at my door in a pant, I’m filled with admiration. Reader sharon says, “I always resolve to walk or take the stairs. Not as exciting as becoming a polar bear or doing yoga naked but it works!!”

It’s Hot in Here

I’ll just let jeansyoga speak for herself: “As a joke, I ordered [a video] on Ebay called “I Want to Strip for My Man, but I Don't Know How!” The idea is that it shows ordinary women how to dance sexy, but there is such a shady, creepy feel to it. Looks like it was shot on a handycam! You'll want to shower afterward!” You can find it here. The product description suggests trying it in 6-inch stilettos. For a more vigorous (actual workout) version check out Carmen Electra’s Aerobic Striptease.
