Rechargeable Apple product batteries can be recycled at any Apple retail location in the U.S.
I live in a small town in north central Illinois and I just called our Radio Shack and they DO accept batteries!!! YEAH!!!

I called several Radio Shacks in the Dallas area and none take alkaline batteries, only rechargeable. One guy told me that alkaline batteries have no effect on the environment and to throw them in the trash. Also, I went to several Whole Foods and no one took the alkaline batteries either.
