8 Ways to Get Your Kids to Eat Healthy

With summer vacation just around the corner, parents across the country should be honing their snack-making skills. How many snacks a day your kids should eat depends on activity levels, age, and individual appetites, but a good rule of thumb is to provide three snacks a day—one mid-morning, one in the afternoon, and one before bed. But how do you get your kids to choose healthy homemade foods over a bag of chips?

Strategy! When done correctly, strategic feeding can work wonders by getting your kids to love every bite of their fruits, veggies, and lean proteins. The success of strategic feeding lies in one small concept: presentation. No, I’m not talking about lofty food towers served on porcelain plates, I’m talking about using healthy ingredients in the form of foods your kids already love to eat: skewers, popsicles, and dips.

8 Fun Food Fixes for Your Kids:

  1. Freeze it! - Monte's Mango Madness

  2. Roll it up! - Soft Chicken Taquitos

  3. Make it mini! - Butternut Mini Muffins

  4. Dip it! - Tomato Basil Hummus

  5. Put it in a sandwich! - Ribbon Sandwiches

  6. Skewer it! - Fruit Medley with Vanilla Ricotta Dip

  7. Have a ball! - Sunflower Fruit Balls

  8. Make it look like dessert! - Fig Newton Lollipops

great ideas

Great ideas!! I have two boys and I am always looking for unique ways to serve them up better food.  I like the popsicle recipe, since it is not to elaborate.  My kids don't like complicated food or food they cannot tell what is in it.  That sometimes makes it difficult to fool them.  But fresh frozen food seems to work.  We also freeze grapes.  They are really delicious frozen.

We love frozen grapes too. Especially when frozen on a toothpick!  Also, frozen bananas are a big hit.  Glad you like the popsicle recipe.

Cybele, I look forward to your articles and recipes. I know there will always be at least 1 recipe for me to try and that your commentaries will make me smile. These suggestions were wonderful - not only will I make them for my grandchildren - but I can't wait to try them for myself!

Thanks Allells!  Yes, these recipes are great for grandparents to make with the grandchildren.  I know many grandparents will be watching the kids this summer, and looking for more to feed them than just milk and cookies.   Let us know how the snacks turn out!!

love bananas

We use frozen bananas in our smoothies.  My boys love them and we put all sorts of left over fruit and yogurt in.  It's also a great way to use up bananas once they are too ripe.

mango madness.

I loved that one.

I think that in my culture (well half of it...) it's easier to eat healthier. Or at least I feel it was easier to eat healthier when I was a child than it is now.

When I used to live in mexico as a child, I remember always enjoying a "pico de gallo" as my mum and I would walk downtown. Pico de gallo is basically just a lot of fruit with some chilli and lemon juice on top.

I really liked mango madness and the ribbon sandwiches though! thanks I'll definitely try them out.
