from SciDev.net

As its economy grows, India is seeking to shepherd its transformation with a mindful consideration of ecological issues. Yet recognizing that it can't halt greenhouse gas emissions, it is taking steps to adapt to climate change that is already inevitable.

It seems like....

....it's always the impoverished who are at the mercy of climate changes, and the decisions of huge companies to pollute with impunity.  I wonder what God thinks about all this.

India may be the next China

India faces many of the same dilemmas that China faced a decade ago (and the United States in the post World War II period), and its markets have performed somewhat the way that China's markets performed several years ago.   Anticipating what decisions India will make is nearly impossible, because so many chaotic and complex factors will be involved.   The United States bears some responsibility here, as we outsource many of our jobs to India, just as we outsourced many jobs to China.    As the economy grows, the people of India will want the same privileges as other people do, and we already see them forming political alliances with nations for oil and weapons.   We seem dismayed that other nations want to develop in the reckless way we have developed, and that is something I don't understand.   It would be hypocritical of us to chastise them, in my opinion, since we are like 4% of the world's population and utilize 30% or so of the entire world resources.   It would be really good for the entire world if all of us could curtail our desires, because we (all of us, across the globe) are pretty much looting and destroying our habitat.    We are the only species that does this.
