Whole Foods Bans Sale of Live Lobsters
June 16, 2006 - 12:51am
from Associated Press
Customers craving fresh crustaceans will have to look beyond Whole Foods Market Inc. after the natural-foods grocery chain decided Thursday to stop selling live lobsters and crabs on the grounds that it's inhumane.

My high school biology teacher told me that crustaceans, who don't have spines, don't feel pain and any noises they make are just "response to stimuli." Anybody know if this is true? I keep telling myself it is because I love lobstah.

What about the veggies?

Every time I hear this argument I have the same reaction. Of course we should be as humane as possible to every living creature. But come on, folks, we eat animals. Animals eat other animals. That's life. Deal with it. Maybe we should worry about the pain all the veggies feel when we chop them up! Get real.

I feel as though it is inhuman to eat veggies...they do not have a fighting chance, at least animals have a fighting chance

born to run

Growing up in Maine, lobsters are a dime a dozen- and I have never been all that enamored.  However, I feel the need to comment as my friend Will has a reoccurring tormented store bought live lobster relationship.  He earnestly insists that his mother buy live lobsters to cook at home, which she does...faithfully.  As soon as she arrives home with the crustaceans, a switch flips.  Such as I can tell his pattern is as follows: Will feels bad, Will waits until his mom is occupied with something else, Will makes off with the lobsters, Will walks down his street, and then Will releases them into Casco Bay.  Naturally Will’s mom is miffed for the rest of the evening.

I guess as far as lobsters are concerned if there's a will there's a way... out!

Man!  Not that I could afford to buy lobster at Whole Foods or know how to cook it, or be brave enough to handle them, but I feel like any meat bought at Whole Foods would at least give me a piece of mind as to it being clean and not full of yuckies!

Forever analyzing contemplating,

I guess since the customer actually does the killing and cooking themselves, this is too icky for the birkenstock wearing whole foods crowd. I mean, they do sell beef, chicken, fish, etc. I guess since only slaughterhouse employees see these animals scream and fight it's OK to sell them!

GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!
by Anonymous on June 19, 2006 - 9:08am
Oh for crying out loud, GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!! I am so sick of hearing this crud. Why is is ok to kill cows, chickens, buffalo, moose, deer, rabbits etc., but not lobster, crabs and such. When you can prove to me, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that putting a live lobster in boiling water hurts them, then I'll listen. I love eating lobster and I will not stop eating them any more than I will stop enjoying a hamburger, a steak or roast chicken. Those guys just have too much time on their hands. Worry about the children of the world who are abused and starved before you worry about a lobster.

What am I going to do?

Alhtough I surely feel for what lobsters and crabs must go through, this poses a major problem for me. My 5 year old loves to visit the lobsters and strike up a conversation with them but now we'll have to figure out something else to do on our weekly visits to Whole Foods.

I can't afford lobster yet I feel involved. Are they going to sell dead lobster? If so that is a cop out for the customers. I grow lots of fruit and veg and explaioned recently to my vegetarian daughter that I feel as guilty about chopping up a cabbage that I have grown as she would do about eating a pet rabbit! But God has made us omniverous. Margaret
