Walk Talk #22—Break In, Walk Out
Posted by Walk Talk on July 10, 2007 - 8:00am.

In July it's hard not to buy shoes. I just see more of them everywhere I go—peering longingly at me from behind the glass like puppies, or tantalizing me like jellybeans in a jar. Of course my obsession hits in the dead of summer, when it's so god-awful hot in New York City that shedding clothes rather than buying them seems like the sane thing to do. But at this point, any color will do, wood, cork, wedge, heel or flat it really doesn't matter—it's summer and everything goes with a tan. That's how I came upon my Terra Plana flats one steamy afternoon in July.

Terra Plana designs supremely eco-friendly footwear made from innovative materials, like recycled vegetable tanned leather, and coffee bags. I knew about these guys before I stumbled into the shop on Elizabeth Street. I didn't know they were having a sale.

I ended up purchasing a perfectly designed pair of black flats (I know what I said about colors before, but my mom was with me, and convinced me I'd wear black more than the pistachio). I put them on immediately. Now, people have particular approaches to breaking in shoes. My mom, for instance, never wears a new pair of shoes for more than three hours at a time. I, on the other hand, power through the pain and wear them as long and for as many days as I possibly can. Part of this is due to my extreme stubbornness (and I'll never admit to the pain), but part is due to my excitement; I only have eyes for the new ones!

The good news: the Terra Planas held their own, and made my Walk Out through Soho much more stylish. I love the details of the design, the way the piece around my heel is separate from the other half of the shoe. Even in the hot hot sun the black E-leather—a rewoven blend of recycled leather and textile fibers—didn't bother me. I will admit there was some rubbing on the back right heel, and come to think of it, on the right toes too. But my right foot is bigger I think, and I couldn't possibly hold that against my go-anywhere, go-with-everything new shoes.

I like them
by Monmac1 on July 10, 2007 - 12:47pm

As for myself I endulge in shoes, I love them! If I had the money I would probably buy a new pair everyday! (btw you are soo lucky to live in NYC, that is my dream city!) I checked out the Terra Planna website and I really love their style! It makes me really happy and excited that they can make shoes that are enviormentally "friendly".  I am 5'10 so when I wear heels I turn into a giant. I honestly do not like being that tall all the time when I decide to dress up. The heels on this site are not too high but just right, and if the heel is too big than you can just go with a flat, which sometimes can be a major loss but these flats at least give you something to work with! Thank you Annie, I think I know where I am going to have to order my next pair of heels!

As for the breaking in of shoes, I usually wear them a couple of hours each day, even if I am just at home,  breaks them in without having to walk on the streets, scuff, or get them dirty!

streets of ny

It seems that whatever shoes you wear, no matter how comfortable they are, the streets of NYC are mean.  Last summer I wore my favorite shoes down in the village and my feet killed me for the next few days.  I will definitely check out the site.   Let us know if they last.

comfort

Well I'm not really fascinated by a shoe... but I like the dopie selection they have. They seem comfortable and I've been pretty consistent with my walking so I've been looking for something fresh for the summer and comfortable enough to walk in. Those dopie are looking pretty good to me right now, might give them a try.

I absoulutly am in love with these shoes, I just bought 3 pairs. These shoes are extra comfortable and are very chic. Thank you for telling me the designers name! Does anyone else know of some other designers?

(Not just for shoes, also for clothing)

Heels and other eco fashion

Monmac I have to admit. I bought the black heels too! They are incredible. So comfortable. And you're right about the heel, it's a great height.

Green Fairy, one site I know off the top of my head is Green Loop for eco fashion. They have compiled a long list of designers in the green space. Check them out. Also, check out Moral Ferver, they're two talented up and coming eco designers.

Love the idea.....

.... of eco-friendly shoes, that is great! I checked out the Green Loop site and they list four other shoe designers that are eco-friendly. So my question is if these manufacturers can reuse materials to design shoes why can all shoe manufacturers?

I am co-owner of Equita, an eco-friendly and ethical online boutique. I've got a few shoe recommendations to add to the list...
Beyond Skin : Not only eco-friendly but ethical and incredibly stylish.  The collection is handmade in England, and is both sweatshop-free and cruelty-free. They also donate a portion of each sale to select ethical charities. http://www.beyondskin.co.uk
TOMS Shoes : A chic, modern take on the Argentine "alpargata" that combines sturdy, lightweight canvas with recycled rubber soles.  TOMS functions under the credo of No Sweatshops and manufactures the collection in Argentina. They also match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair to a child in need.  We have a selection for men and women at:  http://www.shopequita.com/footwear.htm
Green Fairy, I'd like to invite you to our Webshop to check out some of the finest designers of Eco and Ethical Fashions: http://www.shopequita.com

Eco-chic

ha, another way of being fashionably green. While I don't really need shoes right now, I will make sure to make my next purchase from terra. It's also quite inexpensive and I must say that the shoes are rather nice. But! It's truly about being eco-conscious and comfortable rather than being stylish.
