Hemp Milk and Other Foods of the Future
Posted by Su Avasthi on March 14, 2007 - 6:22pm.

I'm very curious about hemp milk.

I hadn't heard of the stuff until I read about it on Epicurious.com's Daily Dish site, because it was a standout at the Natural Products Expo West held earlier this week in Los Angeles.

Seems that hemp milk -- which is made from hemp nuts -- could be poised to replace soy milk in the lattes of the future. I'm not sure it will ever replace the half-and-half that I prefer in my coffee, but I can't wait to try it.

There were several other healthy foodstuffs that got some attention. Anyone with a sweet tooth will be happy to hear about organic hard candies, which come in flavors like goji berry, ginger, pomegranate, and Key lime. They are sweetened with brown rice syrup and cane juice, and get their pretty colors from beet juice, turmeric, and annatto.

Goji berries -- touted as the latest miracle fruit -- also turn up in dark chocolate bars. The super-dark, super-fruit bars, which are already at a very antioxidant friendly 85 percent cocoa, now incorporate goji berries and acai to pack an extra health punch.

Fruit and vegetable chips also got a some buzz. Apparently these are a step up from what's currently available, thanks to advanced vacuum and dehydration technologies that preserves their flavor and texture. I can't really see myself munching on a bag of strawberry chips, but "vacuum-fried" pumpkin chips sound kind of yummy.

And tapioca syrup -- billed as this year's agave syrup -- seems to be latest way to sweeten your cookies and cakes. It's being touted as a healthier alternative to high-fructose corn syrup.

Overall, though, the variety and innovation at the show reflects our growing interest in natural products. Of course, purists (and those of us who sometimes pretend to be purists) might point out that healthy candy is an oxymoron.

As a lifelong fan of sour candies, I can't wait to get my hands on flavors like Key lime and pomegranate.

where can I buy some?

I too am a fan of sour hard candies.  I checked out the Fun candy site and I just love the happy colors.

Are these available in stores in the US yet? I think I need to get some of these.  The gogi berry one looked very enticing as well as the chocolate meltaway.

Not sure

I just poked around their site, hoping to find a list of distributors in the US... but judging from the site info, they might still be looking to get into retail stores.

Hopefully, the trade show will speed things along!

Hemp Milk?

There's no such thing as hemp milk.  Hemp doesn't lactate, unless there's something going on that I don't know about.

a bit sweeter

Tried those goji berries and wish they tasted a bit better.  Maybe in a chocolate bar they could be allright.  I thought they would be a little sweeter.

still prefer soy milk

I was at Expo West and sampled the Hemp Milk (indeed it does exist, Dr. Slice!)  I wasn't crazy for it.  It has a very strong flavor.  I'll stick to soy milk for now.  Also, I was always under the impression that hemp made seeds, not nuts.  I asked them at the show, but nobody could clarify this horticulture for me.  I am a big fan of hemp products, like hemp sneakers, but I still think hemp foods need perfecting.

Harley, have you tried various brands or Goji berries?  The sweetness really differs from one brand to the next.   Also, they are great to cook with, which helps mellow the flavor.

Appreciate a food for what it can do for you.

Taste matters but some foods do so much good for you like Goji Berries whether they taste sweet or not.  Just mix them in cereal.  They'll plump up and get a bit sweeter.

Hemp seed nut?
by LindaRose on August 10, 2007 - 11:27pm
According to the Organic Pharmacy's website, the hemp nut is a "seed nut" ,whatever that means. Here's an excerpt from the website: "A fantastic alternative to soymilk or dairy, our Hempmilk™ is made from the protein-rich hemp seed nut and has a naturally occuring well-balanced ratio of Omega-3 and Omega-6 Essential Fatty Acids. These are the good fats that help maintain a healthy heart, a sharp mind, a strong immune system, and glowing skin."
