Massage Rx

Given that Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine,” in ancient Greece knew about the healing powers of massage, it's hardly news that a good massage has therapeutic benefits. And the medical community is increasingly sold on the positive effect that a professional massage can have on the body.According to a CNN article, medical centers, such as Cardiovascular Institute at New York Presbyterian Hospital--Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, now offer massage as regular therapy for their patients.Research shows that massage and bodywork can help relieve pain, insomnia, PMS, stress, migraine, and many other ailments. For back pain, it seems that massage is more effective than chiropractic therapy and acupuncture. It also appears to have an impact on the hormones that affect our moods and stress levels. Studies show that massage lowers the amount of cortisol, a stress hormone, and simultaneously boosts our levels of serotonin and dopamine.Along with improving our moods, the hormonal shifts slow your heart rate, lower blood pressure, ease pain, and help muscle tissue to heal. More information is available at Health.com.Knowing about the many health benefits is great. A good massage is one of those indulgences that I rarely allow myself. I seem to get them on vacations or if I wake up with stubborn knots in my back that are impervious to an emergency yoga class. But throw in the list of medical reasons to splurge on a massage, and suddenly it seems less like an indulgence (or dire necessity) and more like a smart way to spend money on myself. Which is why I just put a call into a great therapist I know to see if she can squeeze me in this weekend.

Massages are wonderful and now there are so many kinds to target your specific need.  Just be sure to drink a lot of water after your massage to replenish your muscles and flush the lactic acid from you body.  Also, having had a bad massage once (I know, is there such a thing) but yes there is.  If a massage therapist goes too deep into the muscle tissue, they can really do some damage.  So go to one you know or tp a spa that is recommended to you.

Massage Therapy

I am a certified massage therapist in Virginia.  I have been massaging for two years and love it.  I have my own business and couldn't be happier.  I'm going to post the CNN article on my website.  I'm so glad that people are finally waking up to the fact that massage is not just a luxury; it's part of staying healthy like exercise and diet.  As for finding massage therapists in your area, log on to this website: www.amtamassage.org.  At the top of the page, they have a topic, "Find a Massage Therapist".  I just checked and there are eight therapists registered in Miami Beach.  You should be able to find what you need.

Also, ensure that you have a licensed or certified massage therapist.  There are twelve states in the Union that don't regulate massage and that's too bad because anyone who puts up a sign can do it in those states.  Virginia is regulated as is Florida.  If you get on websites like the one I mentioned above, you'll have no problem getting someone professional.

I just had a massage this morning. I try to go at least once a month to keep the tension out of my shoulders and upper back, but that's only one of the many benefits of regular massage! Never underestimate the power of human touch!

body for the long journey
by Vicki_R on March 12, 2007 - 11:44am
Sometimes I think I treat we treat our cars and our homes better than we do ourselves.  We make sure they are clean, work efficiently and that they have regular maintenance.  Our bodies are the same way.  If we expect to live long and healthy lives we need to make sure that we have the body that is going to accompany us on that journey. It is so important to take care of our body from the inside out as well.

Very true

Put in that context, it's so true that I'm willing to take better care of my car (which I don't even like!) than I am to splurge on a massage.....

I've just made a mental note to schedule a massage each time I take the car in for an oil change!

no excuses

By the way, I really enjoy reading your blogs each day.  You seem to touch upon many of the same subjects I am interested in.  I'm sure the LIME forums would love to have your imput.  If you get a free minute check them out.

I too have to make a mental note to get a massage.  My neighbor and friend is a massage therapist and only a doors knock away.  No excuse for me!
