Al Gore's Next Big Idea
Posted by Su Avasthi on February 15, 2007 - 9:00pm.

Let's hand it to Al Gore: Last year, he helped the average American become more aware about global warming and climate change.

This year, he's likely to spread the message to the rest of the world.

Yesterday, Gore launched Save Our Selves (SOS) – The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis, and announced a world concert spectacle called Live Earth. It'll be held on seven continents, including Antarctica on 07.07.07.

On July 7, a series of concerts -- scheduled so far in Shanghai, Sydney, Johannesburg, London, Rio, Kyoto, and a city in the U.S. -- will be broadcast via the web, TV and radio. Organizers (the folks behind "Live 8") expect more than two billion people in 120 countries to tune in.

Already, the line-up is impressive; more than 100 acts have signed on. Among them are the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, Snow Patrol, the Black-Eyed Peas, Snoop Dogg, John Mayer, Keane, Kelly Clarkson, Fall Out Boy, Pharrell, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Bon Jovi, Duran Duran, Melissa Etheridge, Korn, Fall Out Boy, Akon, Pharrell, Enrique Iglesias, AFI, Damien Rice, Corrine Bailey Rae, and it sounds like that's the just beginning.

Meanwhile, the SOS campaign also seems poised to leverage the event to educate people on how to live a greener life. For instance, 07.07.07 could be designated as no-drive days for several cities.

The concerts themselves will be used to establish a Green Event standard, that involves using renewable energy sources for electricity, biodegradable plastics for the snacks from concession stands, sustainable light design practices, air travel through carbon credits, and other steps.

Personally, I believe that awareness is the first step towards change, and pop culture is a great medium to do connect with people. These concerts will reach a staggering number of people and that itself is an amazing feat.

Let's just hope that the concepts -- and not just the music -- make a lasting impression on the audiences.

Good for Al Gore

It's Live Aid for the new decade.  I went to Live Aid many, many yers ago.  It was a memorable experience.  People coming together to make a statement.  I agree with the thought that change begings with awareness.  Al Gore really seems to be embracing his inner self and putting his status where his beliefs are.  Good for him!!!

I hope Al Gore receives the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to educate the world on Global warming with his movie and now his big concert idea.  When you think about it,  global warming is probably the biggest threat humanity faces. It is amazing how many politicians and business execs  have been trying to down play it.  You are a good man Al!
He wants to start at home but

Unfortunately, we have an idiot in the White House who is totally bought and paid for by Big Business.  He doesn't know how or just won't say no to them.  He also doesn't seem to believe that there is a crisis here.

Al Gore is going to other countries that are a lot more sensible.  Heck, we even have people in this country who aren't even aware that his movie has been created and don't believe that global warming exists.  Even when you tell them about it, they just "yes" you to death about seeing it.

Kudos to Mr. Gore

It seems that europe is much more open to addressing the problem of global warming. Recently the president of france reached out to try and form a global committee that would continue looking into this problem.  Of course, the united states has yet to commit to appointing someone.  I don't quite understand why our president seems so adverse to making this a priority.  I am glad that Al Gore has stepped up to the plate and like I said before, is using his presence to bring much needed attention to this problem.  Kudos to you Mr. Gore!

An Inconveniet truth Wins an Oscar!

Al was a hit at the Academy Awards last nite, being funny and also winning for Best Documentary.  He clearly has the vast respect of Artists assembled, and asks people to put aside politics and just focus on solutions to Global Warming.

I think that's the main reason he says he won't run this time around. He intends to help deliver a maximum global solution as a citizen, using education and empowerment - and trusting us all - to use the democracy - and personal choices - to make a difference.  Go for it AL!
