Asanas In Your Pajamas?
Posted by Su Avasthi on August 29, 2006 - 4:02am.

Can a workout get any better than yoga in bed? And I mean a real yoga session with your PJs on -- for those of you whose thoughts just turned tantric.

There’s a new yoga book/DVD out called Yoga in Bed: 20 Asanas to Do in Your Pajamas. The idea is that busy people (or those otherwise unable to make it to regular classes) can benefit from doing a series of yoga poses in the comfort of their own cushy, pillow-strewn bed.

Edward Vilga, a nationally certified yoga instructor, created two brief mini-routines, one for the morning and another for the evening. He also runs through meditation practices.

He claims, along with several fans who’ve posted their reviews on Amazon, that a regular yoga-in-bed practice is quite beneficial for the mind, body and spirit. No one seems turned off by cutesy-sounding names for various postures, like “I’m A Little Tea Pot” pose

I’m not quibbling with people who want to squeeze a little extra yoga into their lives. I say, more power to you. But, after conducting an informal poll amongst the hardcore yogis that I know, the general consensus seems to be: “Hah! That's not real yoga.”

One purist pointed to all the "hybrid workouts" we’ve seen in recent years, such as Yogilates (yoga + Pilates), which also fail to get the hardcore yogi seal-of-approval. Another questioned the mattress vs. floor mat situation, arguing that you need the floor for leverage, balance, stability and alignment. She is certain that as comfortable as beds are, it's not real yoga till you're on the floor. A third just rolled her eyes and walked away.

Granted, these yogis are far more dedicated (or far less lazy?) than me.

Personally, I’m not interested in yoga in bed for an altogether different reason: If I have an extra 15 minutes in the morning, I’m hitting the snooze button.
