Eco-Chic To Die For

At the very least, you can travel to the great beyond in a sleek new ride. A German design firm, UONO, has created this very chic, very glossy and very eco-friendly casket. And it comes in an array of 14 fun colors.

The Cocoon is made by hand with a rapidly, renewable jute and resins that are touted as stable, shapeable and entirely biodegradable within 10-15 years. Those who want to be cremated will be happy to know that it burns clean and the glossy varnish is water-based and ecologically benign. According to Treehugger.com, it also just won a Silver Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) from the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and Business Week magazine.

Generally, I'm pretty indifferent about what happens to my remains. Being donated to science has about as many merits as having my ashes sprinkled in the ocean. Regardless, I'd like to R.I.P in some sort of ecologically-sensitive fashion. But the opportunity to go out encased in a shiny, steel blue pod has its own special appeal.

Sadly, I'm about as likely to be able to afford a Cocoon as I am to drop $10,000 on a Birkin Bag. But, I'm sure lots of folks out there are ready, willing and able to splurge on this luxury item.

Think of it this way: It is the last accessory you'll ever buy.
