Years of living in a tiny New York apartment cured me of any packrat tendencies. In fact, I love the light feeling I get from de-cluttering my closets and cabinets. So when the time came to clean out my bathroom cabinets, I thought it'd be a quick-and-easy project. No such luck.
Inspired by the guidelines from LIME's spring cleaning feature, I cruised through a bunch of steps. I don't buy a lot of stuff in bulk, so there was little packaging to recycle. I only have one hairbrush. Also, I replaced all my expired medications a few months back.
I put a couple of frayed towels in a shopping bag, and made a mental note to donate them to the animal clinic down the street.
Then things got trickier. Somehow, I'd amassed a large collection of hair products that just don't work for me. Hiding in the back of a cabinet -- long forgotten and barely used -- were bottles of leave-in conditioners, tubs of molding pastes, tubes of styling gel, curl-boosters, straighteners, frizz-fighters, a bottle of something that promises to give my hair a dirty texture (what? why?), and (oh, the irony) a specially-formulated shampoo to remove product build-up.
I couldn't bear to toss out these products because they were expensive, cutely packaged, or came from chic salons. And then, there was the guilt. After all, less fortunate people the world over suffer from bad hair days, so who am I to throw away perfectly good product?
Instead, I made up little gift bags for friends so that these products will find better homes. The only exception was the spray that makes your hair look dirty... I'm still not sure what to do with that.
Then it came time to toss out expired make-up. The guide recommends throwing away cosmetics that are older than six months to prevent bacterial build-up.
Here's where I draw the line. Perhaps some people can afford to replace their make-up every six months, but I'm not one of them. Apart from old mascara, I've used expired make-up all my life and lived to tell. I did, however, put aside a few M.A.C. products to take advantage of their recycling program.
Finally, I held onto a tin of lip gloss that I bought while on vacation in 2003. It's one of those rare, perfect, hard-to-find colors that goes with a couple of my favorite cocktail party dresses. The truth is, that lip gloss really is dangerous -- not because it's contaminated, but because wearing it inevitably leads to some reckless and irresponsible flirting. Would you throw it out?

I just had to jump in and say that the two keys to success with passing products on to others are that you give products you have only used once or twice at most and that you find out in advance if your friends want to play! We all experiment with body lotion or shampoo only to find that the product doesn't work for us personally. I wasn't suggesting in the article that half used bottles of products you got tired of should be given to others! I'm going to bet sisters and best friends would be OK with that but that's a special group!
As for make up, Su, I use the same base, blush and lipstick every day. It's pretty rare for any product to last more than 6 months. You may do more product experimenting than I do. Why not call the companies and ask what their guidelines are? I know that mascara needs to be replaced regularly. See what they say about the other products you use.
And thank you sooooo very much for taking my tips to heart and doing some personal experimenting. I hope you enjoy your streamlined bathroom. I know you inspired others to take the plunge!

I do replace my makeup every three months. I have very sensitive skin, in fact, I don't think I should even wear makeup at all. But I still do for interviews and special ocassions.
I don't have any hair products because I don't like the idea my hair is healthier when I don't use any supposedly "anti-damaging" and or "fortifying" products, plus I'm trying to avoid using products that get rid of product-build up, heh.
Anyway, what I do have stored in my bathroom is lotions on top of lotions and let's not get started with body spray and perfume bottles!
I probably will attempt to give these products away, I wonder how some will react when I approach them.
I use Kiss My Face shampoo by the way, like Vicki mentioned their products are paraben free.
I was also inspired to clean after so many folks in lime mentioned it, plus I might move soon so I want to make it easier by getting a head start on the cleaning and organizing.
By the way how can you make your lip gloss last so long?! Mine last a little over a month... if I'm lucky.
One thing I do to keep my gloss is to keep it in a small container and put it in a fridge, been doing it for ages and it SEEMS to work. Bare minerals makes a line of make up that is incredible on your skin and actually improves it. I've been using it for 2 years and my skin hasn't felt this good since grade school. One great thing is, the shelf life is a year, but like most women, I've kept it way over the expiration date and so far nothing has morphed or grown from it! As for mascara, I do buy a new one every 3 months.
I do have a fetish for body sprays and lotions, my husband jokes that I smell like a fruit salad!
I use peach oil instead of perfume and I can't tell you how many times I have entered a room only to hear: "Why do I suddenly smell fruit?" from someone in the waiting area.

Zdog
My mother does the same thing, the only difference is that I am the only one she gives it to! So I guess it is my turn to clean out and deliver the double gifted goods to someone other lucky dog!
I get mine at The Body Shop...they have a huge selection!

Oh the Body Shop oils... I have SO MANY! I particularly like the coconut... It reminds me of summer on dreary days.
