Cheers to Healthy Cocktails
Posted by Su Avasthi on April 26, 2007 - 7:25pm.

Go ahead, order a strawberry margarita at happy hour tonight.

Apart from being a party-in-a-glass, it turns out that fruit-laden cocktails -- passion-fruit margaritas, cranberry Cosmopolitans, pina coladas, salty dogs -- just became guilt-free.

A new study shows that most of those fruity cocktails that come with an umbrella are (you guessed it) suprisingly healthy. Especially when they contain high levels of antioxidant-rich ingredients, such as blackberries and citrus.

The reason? Apparently, the alcohol content in tequila, rum, vodka, and strong types of booze improves our bodies' ability to absorb antioxidants. The ethanol found in alcohol boosts the antioxidant levels, so a cranberry-and-vodka may just be a lot healthier than a glass of cranberry juice.

Reseachers in the U.S. and Thailand stumbled into this happy news by accident. Seems that they weren't trying to debunk our current view on cocktails; instead they were seeking ways to preserve fruit. As a result, I'll raise my umbrella-graced glass and make a special toast to those guys tonight.

Now, I'm sure that this is the point where I should mention that all alcoholic beverages should be consumed in moderation. I should probably remind you that we need to drink responsibly. Or that antioxidants are actually no match for a nasty hangover. And that most of these cocktails have more calories than a Big Mac -- and some exceed 750 calories a drink.

Then again, you already know all that anyway. Besides, chances are some researchers somewhere are currently stumbling onto new and startling data that tells us otherwise.

Who'd have thought....

First it was dark beer, then red wine, then chocolate, and now fruity cocktails. Being an adult is just getting better and better. I do agree with the article though about consumming in moderation and drinking responsibly. Also the calorie thing is a big downer. I think a good Mai Tai every once in a while is just what the doctor (okay, scientists) ordered!

what about citrus
by Vicki_R on April 28, 2007 - 11:54am
I do wonder if it is only for fruits rich in antioxidants or does lime juice or any citrus count?

I agree, everything in moderation!

You should take it easy on your friend becuase it's hard to just have one when they're so good.  I personally love Pina Coladas (virgin) and they just taste soo good you just can't have one. I can only imagine how hard it is to only have one especially when they have alcohol. :)

I do think that you should tone it down on the language though, let's make lime a healthy and friendly environment in anyway that we can.

But enough about that, What's your favorite drink? Or do you have any other drinks that you can suggest for my 21st bday? :)

 Stay in touch,

lily.

never knew it had a name
by Harley on April 30, 2007 - 11:16am
I never knew my favorite college drink actually had a real name.  I just always asked for absolute and grapefruit.  Nice to know I can ask for it by name now.  Haven't had one in years.  Now you got me thinking---

Wow 750 calories that's about a little over one fourth of my calorie intake. Although that really shouldn't be my concern at this point since I'm not of legal age to drink. :) Unless, that is, I go to mexico... which is a little less than 5 miles away!

But who'd think that drinking a pina colada with alcohol would be healthier than drinking one without! =\

being respectful

Who said anything about 10 drinks?  All this is in fun.  It was an interesting article that had a different twist to it, thats all.

Ofcourse, this is a site for healthy living and becoming sloshed every night would not fit the bill.  Let's try and respect each other because we all bring different things to the picture.
