Spring Cleaning: Get Rid of Clutter and Lose The Junk in the Trunk
Posted by Micaela Devaney on March 23, 2009 - 9:39pm.

Spring is here, and there's no better time for a little spring cleaning, de-cluttering and organization. Did you know that there is a direct correlation between how much clutter you have in your home and how much junk you're carrying in your trunk? Meaning, that you might be carrying around unwanted pounds and finding it hard to lose them because of clutter and the disorganization it creates.

Eating healthy and/or losing weight takes organization as much as it takes dedication. In order to lose weight you need to be conscious and mindful of calories and size. When your life is de-cluttered and organized it will allow you time to pack your lunch the night before, helping you to know exactly what and how much you're eating. When your outside world is organized you can start the week off right by menu-planning healthy meals for the week as well as planning ahead for nights out and how you plan to stick to healthy choices. An organized outer world also creates a calmer inner world. With a calmer inner world we are less likely to suffer from anxiety and turn to food for comfort.

Less clutter and better organization will create more time, which will also allow you to exercise more. Look at your calendar for the week and block out the days and times you plan to exercise. Treat those time slots that you plan to exercise like you would an important work appointment, organizing your life around those times and days.

Eating well and exercising regularly is a dedication and a practice, and sticking to a plan of healthy eating and exercise will be much easier when you are organized. Remind yourself that it will take time to de-clutter and become more organized, but your hard work will turn into a habit quickly (it only takes 3-4 weeks of consistently doing something to make it a habit).

Aim to stay organized for 30 days — but work at it every day. Start off with small changes. Don't try to completely organize your life in one fell swoop — you will get overwhelmed and quit. Start with one room or area, like a closet, your desk or the kitchen. Also, do not underestimate the power of a pen and a piece of paper. Make notes for yourself around the house to remind yourself to stay organized and to help you stay consistent. And when you think about giving up and resorting back to your old disorganized ways, remind yourself how something as simple as de-cluttering and staying organized will allow you to eat better and exercise more, which in turn will make you a healthier person.
