Various Shades of Green
Posted by Kim Steckler on April 4, 2007 - 8:34am.

As Hayden waves bye-bye to winter and takes her first steps (literally!) toward spring, I've started thinking about sun protection for my little fair-skinned lady. I thought that once I'd discovered a few solid sources for 100% natural baby products that I'd be home free, but Baby Bee doesn't (yet, anyway) offer a sunscreen product. Nor, for that matter, does VedaBaby. So it's back to the natural store I go.

But before I do, my ever-vigilant husband requests that I lengthen my checklist by not just a few more ingredients. Parabens, it turns out, aren't the only eyebrow-raising chemicals to look out for. And none of these chemicals happen to have pithy little names — octy-methoxycinnamate, anyone? — for my sleep-deprived mommy brain to remember. Kermit wasn't kidding when he said it wasn't easing being green.

If I'm starting to feel overwhelmed, I finally understand why other people throw in the towel, or never try at all. Especially when I visit the natural store and discover exactly what I'm looking for — both Avalon Organics and Aubrey Organics carry baby-safe, chemical-free sunscreens — in plain view alongside various other, so-called natural sunscreens.

Every concern, it seems, unearths another, and being vigilant no longer seems enough to stay sufficiently informed. It takes hyper-vigilence. There are various shades of green, I'm learning, and it takes dedication to be any of them. And all are commendable.

kermit says Stay Green

Sometimes I think, the more we know, the worst off we are.  Being eduacated is one thing, but getting carried away is another.  You are to be commended with your research which helps all of us as well.  But be kind to yourself.  As you said, there are many shades of green.

By the way, I bought a shirt in Target that has kemit on it and it says "Stay Green".  I love it!!! It sounds perfect for you.

By the way, are these products good for adults as well?

The more we know....many shades of green...

Hi there - I just wanted to say that you are right, the more we know, the worse off we are...well, or can be for that matter. I have adopted the belief that "Knowledge protects - Ignorance endangers"....I LOVE 'knowing', even though most of the times there is nothing I can do about my 'knowledge'...but than I LOVE sharing too and I agree we have to be kind to ourselves...

Funny enough, I also own the 'Stay Green' T-shirt. A good friend of mine gave it to me thinking that I should own one as for the many 'shades of green' I attract into my life :-))

Organic, Chemical Free Sunscreen
by trinity8 on April 4, 2007 - 3:27pm

I know what it is what you mean about finding products that are free of parabens, not even to mention all the other ingredients. I have purchased quite a few articles from this website

http://www.greenpeople.co.uk/products.aspx?categoryID=27336778-1aba-4dfd-bada-8086c5876cae.

Among baby sunscreen they also do a range of other baby products as well as adults. They do not include parabens or any chemicals of any kind.

It be nice to know your thoughts on this.

Jason-has anybody heard of him?
by Vicki_R on April 5, 2007 - 6:50pm
I seem to be reading a lot about a line of products called Jason.  I have seen them in Whole Foods and they were recommended to me.  The reviews have been mixed on the sunscreen products.  Some people love them, some so so.  Has anyone tried any of them?  There line extends to soaps, shampoos, deodorants and I think a baby line.
