The Green Room: Orlando Bloom's Enviro-Fans
Posted by Joshua W. Jackson on February 23, 2007 - 4:41am.

Orlando Bloom is more than doing his part. The Hollywood idol recently converted a gaggle of young female fans into environmentalists by setting a good example. "I got a really sweet birthday message from a bunch of girls who said 'I'm unplugging my mobile phone charger and using energy-efficient light bulbs, and I'm really into the environment,' " the star claimed, adding that he sent them a thank-you over the internet. Rumor has it that some girls heard this news and immediately took a tree hostage and refused to let it go until Bloom grants them a date.

Yesterday Tim Robbins was spotted in Lower Manhattan getting into a hybrid car and speeding away. The veteran actor apparently did not look his best, but environmentalists were willing to forgive his appearance in lieu of his transportation choice. Until it occured to them that he could have been riding the subway.

Former President Jimmy Carter welcomed a biodiesel plant to Plains, Georgia this week. Carter has long been concerned about the state of the environment and hopes that the plant will help. He added that he still feels strongly that the best tactic in the fight against global warming is simply to take off the Earth's sweater.

Global Green USA has procured a slew of electric and hybrid limos for this Sunday's Oscars Ceremony in Hollywood. Among those scheduled to arrive in the eco-vehicles are George Clooney and, of course, Leonardo DiCaprio. Still other celebrities have vowed to be even more environmentally friendly by riding the wave of media frenzy to the show rather than take a vehicle at all.

Al Gore was greeted like a rockstar in Toronto this week, where during a presentation he told an audience, "Canada, in the past, has always been known for its leadership." This remark was well-received, but attendees say the rest of his jokes weren't nearly as funny.

It's a shame that it takes hollywood to get us motivated, but whatever helps.  When watching the Oscars last night and listening to the plug by Al Gore and Leonardo, maybe people that otherwise would not have read about this will consider doing their part.  Trends start in Hollywood and this is one we all need to be a part of.
