Five Must-Have Cookbooks of the Fall
Posted by Jessica Harlan on December 10, 2008 - 1:46pm.

I've always thought that a great cookbook makes the best gift, in so many ways. It offers ideas, inspiration, entertainment and, often, a peek into another cuisine or a new way of eating. If you give someone a cookbook that's a particular favorite of yours, it gives insight into your personality, your preferences and your culinary style.

Here are five of the newest cookbooks on the shelves that would make a good addition to any home cook's library... whether it's yours or that of someone on your gift list.

For Families:

Cooking Fun: 121 Simple Recipes to Make with Kids

By Rae Grant

Kids love to cook, and this cookbook offers nutritious recipes that are easy enough for them to do much of the work. Learning how to cook will help them develop a lifelong appreciation for food, and will even encourage them to eat healthier, especially if it's a dish that they themselves prepared. The book includes basic information, like how to set a table and read a recipe, and tips on kitchen safety. Vintage-style illustrations recall books of the '20s and '30s, and give this cookbook an irresistible charm.

For Back-to-Basics Types:

Good Old Fashioned Jams, Preserves and Chutneys

By Sara Paston-Williams

If you grow your own fruit, or like to take advantage of the seasonal bounty at the farmers' market, learning how to preserve food is a rewarding and environmentally responsible technique. This book explains the basic methods, how to choose ingredients and equipment, and offers both basic recipes and innovative new offerings.

For Vegans:

This Crazy Vegan Life: A Prescription for an Endangered Species

By Christina Pirello

The host of Christina Cooks, Naturally!, on public television, talks about veganism as a lifestyle, not just a way of eating. She discusses not only nutrition, but exercise, consumer choices for animal-free products, environmental issues and education. For those new to the vegan lifestyle, a 28-day nutrition and fitness plan is included, along with sample menus and about 100 healthy recipes.

For the Adventurous Palate:

Cooking with My Indian Mother-In-Law: Mastering the Art of Authentic Home Cooking

By Simon Daley

At once a cookbook and the sweet story of the special relationship that developed between the author and his wife's mother, this book is a good entry point into the exotic world of Indian cooking. You'll learn traditional recipes that are handed down from mother to daughter throughout generations of Indian families, and photographic step-by-step instructions simplify some of the more complicated techniques.

For the Stargazer:

Rocco Gets Real

By Rocco DiSpirito

Fans of the cute celebrity chef will appreciate the easy, quick recipes in this book, many of which appear on his new show of the same title. There are more than 130 recipes, and special sections include healthy recipes (including some that appeared on the show The Biggest Loser) and holiday recipes.
