Just Desserts
Posted by Jessica Harlan on August 9, 2007 - 8:52am.

I blame my recent pregnancy for the fact that now I find it hard to go even one night without having dessert. Although we know by now that being pregnant doesn't automatically give you license to eat whatever you want, it still does allow you to be a bit more lenient with your diet... after all, you're fat already, aren't you?

It was easy to attribute my frequent desires to go to Dairy Queen to pregnancy cravings. After Sadie was born, the visits were a little harder to justify, until my mother-in-law mentioned that her own mother used to refer to postpartum indulgences as "putting a little cream in the milk."

But I digress. My husband doesn't have the excuse of being pregnant, but he, too, developed a rapacious sweet tooth. Now our baby's nine months old, but we still can't control our cravings for sweets. We'll be sitting on the couch, getting ready to watch "Flight of the Conchords," and one of us will eventually say, "What's for dessert?"

Which, in our efforts to keep healthy and watch our weight, is not necessarily an easy question to answer.

We've come to rely on a few low-fat favorites... I'll share mine if you'll also chime in with suggestions of what you eat when the sweet tooth strikes!

By far our favorite dessert is angel food cake with Edy's Slow-Churned Ice Cream. I'm particularly fond of the Cherry Chocolate Chip flavor, which tastes like maraschino cherries. Combined with the sweetness of the angel food, it reminds me of birthday parties. And the Edy's ice cream is a great option for ice cream addicts like myself—it claims to be half the fat and one-third fewer calories than normal ice cream, although I suspect this is because you're actually eating less ice cream since it is made by whipping more air into the ice cream. However, I'm not complaining—it's still delicious!

When we run out of ice cream, we'll stir up some vanilla low-fat or fat-free yogurt and drizzle that over the angel fruit like a healthy crème anglaise; if we have fresh berries in the house, we'll add a handful of blueberries or strawberries.

And when we run out of angel food, it's time for tin roof sundaes. I'd never heard of tin roofs and assumed they were an invention of my husband's family, but apparently they're an old-school sundae. I make them by sprinkling salted peanuts (the kind with the skins are best) and drizzling Hershey's syrup over vanilla ice cream. When we're feeling particularly virtuous, we'll subistitute Kashi GoLean Crunch for the peanuts—it gives the right amount of crunchiness and nuttiness to the sundae without the fat.

Speaking of Kashi, we've discovered recently that this growing company, which I already love for its use of healthy whole grains and its conviction of making all-natural and preservative-free foods, makes cookies. We tried the Oatmeal Raisin Flax and discovered that they're soft and chewy, but with incongruous little super-crunchy bits thrown in (that would be the flax, I suppose). They're not unpleasant, and in fact reminded me of the Grandma's brand cookies that I loved as a kid.

But sometimes nothing will do but a chocolatey, fudgy brownie. No Pudge to the rescue! This brownie mix is all-natural and I love the inspiring entrepreneurial story of founder and former nurse Lindsay Frucci. You just add fat-free vanilla yogurt to the mix and cook it for precisely 34 minutes, and you'll get thick, chewy, fudgy brownes.

Which are even better, of course, with a scoop of ice cream on top.

Dark chocolate
by Ecobabe on August 9, 2007 - 3:17pm
I tend to limit our dessert eating to just a couple of nights a week. The other nights we indulge in hearth healthy dark chocolate. It's just the right amount of sweetness and we feel like we have had a full on dessert.

Fruit for me
by Green_Gardener on August 9, 2007 - 8:45pm
I tend to eat fruit when I want something sweet. It always hits the spot and I don't feel guilty about it. Of course there is the one night a week where we allow ourselves to have ice cream. We eat the low fat version of Breyer's, it really is yummy and has half the fat of regular ice cream. What is life all about if you can't indulge every so often?

Dagoba
by nyxchik on August 10, 2007 - 9:06am

I agree with ecobabe... dark chocolate is our weakness. Dagoba is by far our favorite; it is organic and heavenly. Xocolatl is the best flavor, in our opinion (dark chocolate, chilies & nibs). As they say on their wrapper, "You can deprive the body, but the soul needs chocolate". We agree. No need to eat the whole bar; a square will do. Nibble it slowly and savor; I promise you won't miss the ice cream!

I also make a topping for any kind of fresh fruit, using vanilla yogurt, honey and cinnamon. It's a staple when my stepkids are here; they love it and it's relatively healthy :)

mmmmm.....

As I say all is fair in love and chocolate! I absolutely adore chocolate as well, they say chocolate makes a woman feel like she is in love, which I am lacking very much of, so lately I have been indulging in it myself. And I will have you admit brownies, are my favorite, but I have never heard of this baking brand before. I will have to try it, I love the chocolate but not the pounds, hope it tastes good.

No Pudge is definitely a good substitute...
by JessicaHarlan on August 10, 2007 - 4:25pm
...both for love and for fattier brownies. You should definitely check out the No Pudge varieties; I get mine at Trader Joes' but they are probably also available at Whole Foods or at nicer supermarkets. Let us know what you think-- you won't be disappointed. They are as fudgy and rich as a much more sinful brownie. My favorite thing about them is that some intrepid fan has even come up with a single-serving version that you can microwave in a little custard cup. I know that we ate our entire pan of brownies in 3 days, so making them one at a time is definitely a way to keep wayward cravings in control.

love the Edy's
by Vicki_R on August 10, 2007 - 3:13pm
You are another convert to Edy's.  We found the French Silk-cappuccino flavored icecream with chocolate bits.  All I can say is it is ADDICTING.  My husband has it every night and my kids really like the chocolate chip.  I fancy the peanut butter marshmellow-it only comes out in the fall.  As for the pudge brownies, found those a few years ago to.  You have good taste and as I grow older I seem to crave sweets more.  I still would have a pizza over dessert, but sometimes when I'm feeling sinful, I have both.

Going for the Breyer's
by Statuesqueone on August 10, 2007 - 7:41pm
I bought some of the Breyer's low fat ice cream and am going to try some tonight. With my recent ulcer diagnosis (ugh!) I haven't had many flavorful meals lately. So I'm thinking a small bowl of low fat ice cream is just what I need to reward my taste buds for being good to my stomach!

just try Edy's
by Vicki_R on August 11, 2007 - 1:19pm
Try Edy's.  I promise you that you won't be disappointed.  I swear that is tastes just like real icecream.  I don't even miss the real stuff.
