How often do you use that power drill in your garage? Or watch that DVD you bought because it was on sale? Sure, lots of sites let you trade or sell used goods, but for those items you may use again, new sites are popping up to let you share your occassionaly-used goods with your neighbors. A few to try:
>> NeighborGoods. Plug in your zip code to see a Google map that displays the borrowable goodies near you! Find out what your neighbors are willing to lend — and meet your neighbors to make new friends while you’re at it! This site’s in Alpha, so Southern Californians can sign up easily, but those in other areas will need to first request a code.
>> Neighborrow. If you live in Manhattan, Neighborrow can help you find neighbors to share tools and other goods with, so you can avoid buying stuff you only need for a one-time deal. Book borrowing seems to be an especially popular category on this site.
>> Home Depot Rents. No, this site’s, of course, neither particularly neighborly nor grassroots. However, Home Depot’s rental spots offer all manner of tools that can help you with your one-time projects. I honestly don’t understand why people buy power tools and steam cleaners when those objects will simply have to be stored unused in garages or storage units most of the time. Rent, don’t buy!
