Green Tips For a Dry Climate
Posted by Siel on September 8, 2009 - 12:34am.

Yes, water’s getting scarcer, and the weather’s getting hotter and drier. Here’s how to put that not-so-sanguine eco-knowledge into green use:

>> Stop driving, start dehydrating. Lyanda Lynn Haupt at Tangled Nest’s got photo-illustrated instructions to help you dry local, organic fruit in your car. Why buy an infomercial gizmo when you can reduce carbon emissions by keeping your car parked—and making it produce dried fruit?

>> Don’t have your own fruit tree? How about making our lawn water-sensitive? Read The Dry Gardening Handbook: Plants and Practices for a Changing Climate by Olivier Filippi, which, according to the L.A. Times review, offers “gardening tips and fantasy splendor”—and water-conserving cunning.

>> Yes, we’ve got fires in the dry lands of southern California. Learn more about this strange annual eco-catastrophe by reading Treehugger’s post “Why Does California Burn Every Summer?” Then read up on “Global warming, California, and wildfires” to find out why these fires spell bad news for us not just today, but in the years to come.

Knowledge is power, and eco-action's eco-change. Make change happen in your neighborhood.

I do everything I can to save and recycle water wherever possible. It is possible to reduce our use of water.

My step Mom teaches me all the time about how to be greener each time we get together. She comes from the old school of reuse, remake or recycle. She practically lives off the land which is so interesting. In the times we are in these days it is good to go back to the old styles of life.
