Eco-documentary The End of the Line, which came out earlier this year, seems to have created an uptick in fishy news. Here’s what’s happening in our edible oceans:

>> World’s fisheries at risk of collapse, but recovery is possible, is what the Agence France-Presse reports. The good news: “The study found that a range of management strategies helped protect and restore fishing stocks.” The bad news: The study “was mostly confined to managed fisheries in developed countries where long-term data on fish abundance is collected. The threat of collapse could thus be even higher in the remaining 75 percent of the world’s fisheries.”

>> And now, eco-fishermen and and fish buyers can unite, thanks to FishChoice. This new service connects producers of sustainable seafood products with both restaurant and retail buyers. Using info from six respected environmental organizations—Blue Ocean Institute, New England Aquarium, Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Program, Marine Stewardship Council, Sea Choice, and FishWise—FishChoice gives buyers product names, origin, catch or aquaculture method, and sustainability rankings.

>> You’ll notice that the organization Partnership for Sustainable Oceans—as green as it sounds—did not make it into FishChoice’s list of six orgs. Why not? According to the California League of Conservation Voters, Partnership for Sustainable Oceans is “an industry front group that is raising more than $1 million from foreign and national fishing equipment manufacturers, boat makers, and Washington, D.C.-based trade associations to torpedo California’s efforts to protect depleted fisheries and marine life off the Pacific coast.”

So opt for sustainable seafood and let the eco nonprofits you know and trust—NOT the seafood industry itself—define what “sustainable” is for you.
