Apparently, some drugs harm the environment as well as the body!
>> Methamphetamines are bad news for the environment. Making meth requires toxic chemicals and, often, lots of packaging waste. “For every one pound of methamphetamines produced, three to six pounds of toxic waste can be created,” writes Josh Peterson in Treehugger, who also notes that meth can “ruin farmland, make houses unlivable and destroy forests.”
>> Snorting cocaine is an environmental crime, according to scientists, who say “the production of a gram of cocaine means the destruction of four square metres of Colombian forest.” The entire production chain of cocaine creation is messy: “Every year, 20 million litres of acetone, 13 million litres of gasoline and 81 thousand litres of sulphuric acid are used in this process and then thrown away, untreated, in rivers and water streams.”
>> Marijuana can be responsible for serious diesel pollution. Apparently, some Californian weed growers are powering their generators with diesel. Says one environmental health specialist: “We find 100-KW generators with multiple 10,000-gallon diesel storage tanks sitting on the ground, commonly in a creek drainage with good riparian coverage, with makeshift piping, hoses, and no seismic support.” Too bad organic certification isn’t available for medical marijuana — yet…
