If you're like me, you often feel deluged by requests for donations from environmental nonprofits. But this week, my inbox has been filled with news of cool things these nonprofits have accomplished! Some of the highlights:
>> Greenpeace pushes for greener Macs -- and gets them! Last week, Apple debuted a new line of Macs that don't use PVC internal cables or internal components containing brominated flame retardants. The good news is in part due to Greenpeace's "Green my Apple" campaign, which had eco-minded iMac and iPod owners create their own subversive Apple ads, like the Magritte-inspired one to the right.
>> Environmental Working Group revealed the dirty secret in bottled water. “Disinfection byproducts, fertilizer residue, and pain medication” are among the gross substances EWG found in bottled water. In fact, “Several Sam’s Choice samples purchased in California exceeded legal limits for bottled water contaminants in that state.” Instead of shelling out all that money for bottled water that's sometimes even dirtier than tap water, EWG recommends using a simple filter for almost-free tap water instead.
>> The League of Conservation Voters released its 2008 scorecard rating members of congress on their environmental votes. Sadly, the presidential candidates didn't do so well, with McCain scoring 0% and Obama 18%, due to missed votes. Check the scorecard to find out how your state senators and representatives are doing!
