Change the Drive: From Radiohead Concerts to Free Electric Cars
Posted by Siel on August 19, 2008 - 10:53am.

Radiohead fans learn the public transportation system, start to carpool. After Thom Yorke's eco-threat — "I would consider refusing to tour on environmental grounds, if nothing started happening to change the way the touring operates" — Radiohead fans are starting to stop fighting traffic and getting on mass transit, especially since the band's offering fans incentives to green up. "In Atlanta, for example, the promoter offered early entry to the gig for ticketed concert-goers that showed up with evidence they’d traveled to the venue using MARTA, the local mass-transit system."

>> The 55 mph speed limit gets a movement behind it. The people at Drive 55 want to reinstate the national 55-miles-per-hour limit as a means of reducing our dependence on foreign oil. The slower speed would also help popularize electric cars NOW, the advocates point out, because most of today's electric cars available for $35K or less top out at 45 MPH: "A top speed of 55 MPH for all vehicles will allow smaller, more efficient vehicles to share the public road." Electric cars could be given out free, like cell phones, if Shai Agassi has his way. He wants to "blanket a country with a network of 'smart' charge spots," letting drivers plug in anywhere by subscribing to a plan — "unlimited miles, a maximum number of miles each month, or pay as you go — all for less than the equivalent cost for gas. They'd buy their car from the operator, who would offer steep discounts, perhaps even give the cars away. The profit would come from selling electricity — the minutes."
