From Satire to Sincerity

Forget staycations! Now we have oil sands tourism! A new spoof "eco-tourism" website from Greenpeace invites vacationers to explore Alberta by paragliding over "the unique coal bed methane and sour gas updrafts." The tongue-in-cheek website intended to draw attention to the environmental disasters caused by the tar sands operations in Alberta. According to Greenpeace, "It's modernizing the way the world sees Alberta -- one barrel at a time."

Don't find the oil sands enticing? Then be inspired to turn your home into an edible eco-paradise! Watch the trailer for Homegrown, a new film that follows the Dervaes family, who live off the grid and harvest over 6,000 pounds of produce from their quarter-acre urban organic farm in the heart of Pasadena, Calif. No news yet as to when the full film will be released, but you can follow the adventures of the Dervaes family via their blog, Path to Freedom.

Or think outside the home to look at the bigger picture of global climate change -- and its relation to poverty. Oxfam America, most famous for its "Make Poverty History" campaign, has kicked off a new Climate Change campaign, pointing out that the world's poor are disproportionately affected by the effects of global warming. "We are asking that the US cut greenhouse gas emissions, and provide financial assistance so that the most vulnerable communities can adapt," announces Oxfam's website. Check out the 3-minute campaign video below:

The "Oil Sands" video is awesomely hilarious! It shows us just how ridiculous our dependence on oil is and what it is doing to our world.
