Make Your Earth Day Resolution
Posted by Siel on April 22, 2008 - 2:48pm.

Make every day Earth Day by setting a green resolution! Here's some help to get you started:

Start an edible garden, as Michael Pollan urges you to do: "It’s one of the most powerful things an individual can do — to reduce your carbon footprint, sure, but more important, to reduce your sense of dependence and dividedness: to change the cheap-energy mind." Get outside to enjoy the warmer weather while creating your own veggie garden — and soon, you'll be reaping the fruit of your labors, literally!

Ride public transit — to find love or at least a good story! De-car and have fun while you're at it: New Yorkers can check out Subway Crush, which is like Craigslist's Missed Connections, except for subways. Hopefully this'll expand out to other cities! And for a laugh, read Steven Leigh Morris' hilarious account in LA Weekly of a recent memorable bus ride. Afterwards, you'll be inspired to get out of your lonely car and travel with fun company!

Want a more comprehensive green-your-life plan? Find out what your eco-footprint is — and how to reduce it. Redefining Progress' Ecological Footprint Quiz shows you just how many Earths it would take to sustain your current lifestyle, even accounting for the city's infrastructure! If you find your life requires 3-4 Earths, don't despair — just follow the "Reduce Your Footprint" button at the end of the quiz, and set some eco-goals! Then take the quiz again on Earth Day next year to see how well you've done.
