Total Health: What’s It Mean to You?
Posted by Caroline Shannon on July 20, 2009 - 7:13pm.

Total health is a concept that is tough to define—meaningful words with a heavy definition. For some people, the achievement of wellbeing is learning how to recover from a less-than-favorable health detour, to make a decision to live more healthfully. Other people seek a slimmer waistline, better eating habits or a less-stressed state of mind.

One thing is for sure, however: No matter our different definitions of total health, we are all traveling down a similar path—one that leads us to a better (healthier) version of our current selves.

My life has always been heavily influenced by nutrition, fitness and what my mom always told us was “positive thinking!” I was the only kid in fourth grade with a toasted wheat bread sandwich stuffed with shredded carrots and alfalfa sprouts. I was also the only 16-year-old in my school who had her Pilates certification.

So, the life of living à la healthy had its perks. I learned at an early age what health meant to my quality of life, and held steadfast to those very principles that came hand-in-hand with hummus and five-mile running “adventures.”

As an adult I have, however, learned to tailor those ideas—those healthy living rules—to mean something to me. I would, after all, be remiss if I were simply to continue living under the notion that everyone defined total health in the same manner I did (or, in my case, the same way my parents did when I was young).

Because the truth is, your interpretation of those words—total health—is really what is important. That is, of course, because without your personal definition the accomplishment of such a matter would mean nothing to you. You would feel like you have to work out because somebody somewhere said it was a good idea. Chomping on lettuce would seem like a fine addition to a meal because they (whoever they are) said it was healthy. This will only work temporarily. It is not until an individual decides what total health means to him (and why it is important) that he will be able to start down that path.

While this might be easier for some of us than others (not everyone has access to the right information or the means to meet the need), it is important to keep in mind this one thing: You are working toward a better you—each day, every day.

I am not always perfect with exercising (sometimes chocolate cake is more appealing) and I don’t always have the loot to buy organic (thanks a lot, checkbook), but I know for sure that I wake up every day with the intention to live that day as healthfully as possible. And that’s all we can really ask for. Sure, a cozy couch and bowl of double-fudge brownie ice cream can sometimes have their way with my intentions and me. But, surely, that deterrence can be met with a trough-sized salad for dinner or an extra-long walk the next day. The point is to continue down the path—despite the many side trips we often experience along the way.

And, alas, we come to my purpose, the plan for this blog. I hope to share with you the ideas and inspirations that help to shape my everyday total health goals (dreams, aspirations...). I do not want you to take everything I say to heart—I know you won’t anyway. Instead, make it your own, shape the information as you wish to see it fit your total health goals. This is a take it or leave it (or get creative) situation here, people.

All I ask is that you join me down this path... wherever it may lead for you.

I'm curious: What's your definition of total health? When do you feel you are at your best?

Well said, Caroline...healthy living rules are as unique as our fingerprints. I think that our interpretation of what total health really is depends on where we are in life at a particular moment in time. Sometimes, we're well balanced and things are going along at an even keel so exercise and eating right can be effortless, and then at other times, everything seems willy-nilly and all you can do is eat chocolate (okay....all "I" can do.)

It's funny...as I write these words, I'm thinking, "yeah, you're the LAST one to give advice", and it's true. My path is willy-nilly to the max right now and I just can't seem to get back on track to my ideal health "zen" space, but that is my ultimate goal. Lately, I've been working on my brain and my ability to be a better environmental steward...I joined an online green social network (www.greenwala.com) and I've learned so much about doing my part to make the world a greener space.

My next goal -- jump back on the exercise train. Next goal after that? Lay off the chocolate...it's not meant to be a fifth food group (I KNOW I should know better, but....) My total health plan is definitely about bringing my mind body and soul back into balance, no matter how out of control everything else may seem in my life.

i just want to say that if we talk about health then i must say it is a life time commitment . we should care about every thing from food to exercise. there are some rules to improve our life style and important one are

1.   Exercise is essential for weight loss
2.   Weight loss and weight training
3.   Keep a diary for triggers that hinder weight loss
4.   Stay focused on being healthy, not on becoming thin
5.   Find out why you overeat
6.   Weight loss support: join a weight management group
7.   Weight loss and portion control
8: Lose weight slowly with small changes
9.   Eating slowly can lead to weight loss

It's hard for me to describe how completely over-the-top excited and proud this makes me. First, that we have folks here at HealthVault who care enough about what we're doing to sit down and build polished apps like this on their own time. Second, that a huge company like Microsoft recognizes the value of this kind of innovation, and is able to see beyond bureaucracy to create a place for it to thrive. And last, that I know things like this actually work and will have a positive health impact on real people.

It depends from per son to person how they fixed their health routine. But the bottom line is being healthy and its a fact that healthy living is not all about burning your calories or gaining more and more muscle. In My case i do totally depend upon proper diet especially veg foos and yoga. Yoga is something that will grow your endurance, flexibility and positive mindframe.......................

Healthy Mind & Spirit
by Sammy1983 on November 10, 2009 - 5:28pm
Total health is a mixture of well being. A life must be filled with a enjoyment of healthy eating, being in healthy relationships, and moving around to be physically healthy. When combined all of these contribute to the healthy mind, which makes a healthy spirit that can be shared with others creating a healthy atmosphere for all. Our world is filled with distractions of bad eating leading to trying to find easy ways to lose weight. Then we have bad relationships that lead to a bad lifestyle which is like a virus we must cure. We must live in the present moment and not worry about things we have no control over and only just live our lives in control then we will be in a healthy place.
