Georgia likes to have her nails painted. She’s a fancy tomboy, which means she never lets her fanciness get in the way of her active lifestyle. So of course she has always loved to have her nails painted, even though the polish doesn’t wear well during fossil digs and bee house building. And because she’s always got her fingers in her mouth, since she is
so chewy, I’ve always been a bit concerned about nail polish. The fumes are terrible while it’s being put on, and then the chips surely must be getting ingested. But I figured as long as we only do fancy polish days once a month or so it probably wouldn’t be as bad as, say, living in the pollution of an urban environment. Nail polish is one of the things that gets through the unsealed cracks of our greenish lifestyle.
So I was really happy to see
Piggy Paint, a nail polish designed especially for kids that claims to be “natural as mud.” I got a sample and checked out the ingredients. It sure looked a lot simpler than the rest of the polish in our medicine cabinet, only three ingredients with various colors, depending on which color you get. Georgia and I tried it out. It went on easily, didn’t stink, and looked pretty. We put on two coats and, as per instructions, used the blow dryer to harden them up. I instantly scuffed my thumb putting the Piggy Paint in the cabinet, and Georgia’s ensuing rock and lavender tower project took off some of the sheen, but I may not have been patient enough with the blow drying!
I decided to check Piggy Paint’s score on the
Skin Deep database, and wasn’t really surprised that the brand hasn’t been listed (it was invented by a
SAHM with two little girls, she may not have had time to input it). So I looked up the individual ingredients. Acrylic resin rates a 4 (out of 10) for toxicity, and thickeners run between 1 and 3, depending what thickener they use. Glycol ethers can be a 1 or an 8, but the particular ingredient Piggy Paint contains isn’t disclosed. There certainly are fewer things to worry about since Piggy Paint doesn’t contain formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, biphenyl A, ethyl acetate or acetone.
Being a big ‘ol skeptic, I am always worrying about hidden ingredients, and mistrustful of companies that don’t disclose all of their ingredients. I also know that some things certified by the FDA for cosmetic use aren’t all that safe so I’ll feel a lot better when I see a Skin Deep rating, and a fully disclosed ingredients list. But I think Piggy Paint is a much safer product than your average drug store nail polish, and I will definitely start weeding out the really, positively toxic nail polish and replacing it with Piggy Paint.
