Healthy Hair Color (It's to Dye For)

For the millions of women (and a few men too) who strive to hide their grays or enliven their natural color, regular hair treatments require lots of time and money. In most cases, they can also take a toll on your health.

According to the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep report, many major hair coloring brands contain at least several chemicals that may increase the risk of cancer. A good expample? Garnier Nutrisse Level 3 Permanent Creme Haircolor contains p-phenylenedIamine and methylparaben among other toxins. If you get your hair colored in a salon, it's a good move to ask your stylist about the products he or she uses. Chances are fairly strong that they contain chemicals.

Toxins are not the only option for vibrant color. Henna is a pure, if somewhat limited, option. A member of the Lawsonia plant family, henna is usually dried and ground into a powder and then combined with hot water. It offers a few color options (mostly dark browns and reds) and doesn't cover gray or white hair sufficiently. But, henna is more than color. It also strengthens hair, keeps the scalp healthy, fights dandruff and hair loss, and makes your hair shiny.

Other natural coloring options including brands like EcoColors — whose slogan: “healing the planet, one head at a time,” really says it all — claim to be toxin-free. EcoColors uses lecithin, vitamin E, Vitamin C, nettles, rosemary, flower essence, and grapefruit seed extract in their color concoctions. Aubrey Organics' Color Me Natural has an impressively short ingredient list that includes indigofera tinctoria (true indigo), Lawsonia inermis, emblica officinalis (gooseberry), eclipta alba, and acacia cathechu.

With Taylor Hicks success why can't we all start loving our gray's. I'm embracing it as they start to take over my brown's. Maybe i'll start filming my progress at my blog and Gray Hair will be the look of a healthy head. Keep ya posted. Rachel veryveggie.tv

You know, Emilou Harris looks very young and has all gray hair now! If I thought I'd look that great with gray, I'd stop coloring!

Don't use henna unless you're willing to live with the results if you end up not liking them. You can't use conventional hair color on hair that's been dyed with henna.

I put about a teaspoon of olive oil in palm of my hand, then rub in scalp every day before blow drying. I also use about 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil which is good for the scalp & skin with the olive oil. Every month you should give yourself a good hot oil treatment using natural things such as olive oil, yogart, coconut oil, crushed avacado, mayonaise, almond oil & saflower oil. Put a little of each on you hair & scalp & rub in scalp. Then put on a heating cap you can buy in store, or hot towel wrapped around head for about 20 to 30 minutes. Hair should start coming alive again.

I am over 50. I like natural hair. When I see a mature woman that dyes her hair, it looks so unnatural. Natural hair looks so much better. Then the men that dye their hair, yuk. They look dumb.

Those hair in the post picture is too good to be true and if they are true then tell me the way to get half of those hair, they look to me as so full (a head or scalp full of hair) and so healthy. Does Lecithin help at all.

Hair Extensions

There are so many celebrities that opt for hair extension these day. I saw a recent picture of Lilly Allen and she was sporting natural dark hair extension and I thought she looked chic.
