Last week's fashion week in New York City is in direct astrological conjunction with the rosy mists of Valentine's Day. And hipster fashion designer Marc Jacobs has been flaunting this collision of calendars within the windows of his West Village store. Starsky + Cox stargazing sextrologists and former editors of Wallpaper Magazine, are giving free horoscope readings there through the end of the day tomorrow.
Stella Starsky and Quinn Cox view their popularity in the fashion industry as a natural outgrowth of their strong ties to New York's fashion and design scenes, “We found ourselves having the most intelligent and engaging discussions about astrology at dinner parties with our fashion industry friends.” Fashion and design professionals were the “open minded early adopters.”
The basic premise of sextrology and of their book, Sextrology, is that gender plays a crucial—and too commonly overlooked—role in how one's astrological signs manifest. A Leo female is quite different than a Leo male. From this standpoint the authors then describe relationship pairings, including pairings for same sex relationships. Written in a slightly sassy, but clear and descriptive manner, the book is refreshing. Culling examples of archetypes from art history, popular culture, and literature criticism, the book uses clear, well written language, if moderately highbrow, to thread these illustrations together into the common fabric of mythology from which most astrology books draw.
Their 12 gem-studded suggestions at Style.com may have financially leapfrogged you and I altogether, but if they continue having free clinics like the one running through Valentine's Day at Marc Jacobs, they're easily forgiven.
