A Christian media and research company has recently published a special report claiming that nearly three quarters (73%) of all American teenagers have “engaged in at least one type of psychic or witchcraft-related activity, beyond mere media exposure or horoscope usage.”
The report, Ministry to Mosaics: Teens and the Supernatural, is for purchase directly from The Barna Group. Sensational as it sounds, the findings are said to be compiled from extensive research conducted in three nationwide studies, surveying more than 4,000 teens.
The Barna Group considers witchcraft among American teens to include playing with a Ouija board, reading occult literature, and playing games featuring sorcery or witchcraft. Séances and magic spells are also said to be popular. They estimate that nearly seven million youth have encountered “an angel, demon, or some other supernatural being.” Allegedly two million young adults report to have communicated with the dead. The same number claim psychic powers.
The report doesn’t explicitly cite the criteria used to determine what is or is not considered to be paranormal, occult, or witchcraft related. What do you think their position is on the aperiodic and anomalous Harry Potter book burnings? Is yoga considered to be supernatural?
Written primarily for youth workers, pastors, and parents, the report dubs today’s youth the “Mosaic Generation”—based upon their collage of sensibilities and “patchwork of values.”
“The Mosaic generation is in a state of spiritual turmoil. They long for personal meaning and they are comfortable with incredible technological and media-driven tools that would enable them to accomplish whatever spiritual goals they choose. But millions of teens are precariously close to simply shelving the Christian faith as irrelevant, uninspiring, and ‘just a phase.'”
